so what you're saying is

"no don't have fun the way i don't like!!!"

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
(Not the OP, just someone who can't stand willful misunderstandings)

Um, nice try, but no. Disliking something is not the same as saying nobody else should like it, either. I hate licorice, but if you enjoy it, then you can have all the licorice you want.

Thank you. I couldn't have put into words why those irritated me.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh it sounds a lot like wishful thinking. "this is how me and my friends would act in the wizarding world and we would be soooo coooool."

This. It's just a bunch of teenagers harmlessly goofing off on the internet. Dunno why that would upset somebody.

I hate muggleborn headcanons soooo much. It's neat if muggleborns get into science and stuff and become astronauts after Hogwarts, but the school has had muggleborns for years, and it hasn't had some weird cultural revolution of movies and things.

Speaking of astronauts I like the post going around tumblr where wizards apparently don't know what the moon is. They have astronomy class at Hogwarts.

Yeah, I think the fact that those posts mostly just ignore what happens in the books is also particularly annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd think the other way around would be funnier, like Hogwarts visits Texas

"You mean people just carry around lethal weapons? What if everyone shoots each other"
"You carry around wands, don't you?"
"Er... hrm well"

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You didn't make the Hogwarts house you wanted, did you?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand. It's headcanon about what "muggleborn" students would do at the school? But they already do go to the school. Is this like somebody saying "What if poor people went to the school in Clueless and all the Clueless kids would be rich and dumb and the poor kids would be like, 'Uh, POOR PEOPLE STUFF', and Cher and the others would be like Whaaaaat??"

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, an example for what OP means would be: Muggleborn kid makes a funny movie reference, all the other muggleborns in their class get it and laugh, while all the purebloods stare in confusion.

I think the idea is that they are the minority among Wizarding kids - that's what I've always assumed. I think it's, in fact, VERY similar to a nerdy or geeky kid making a Doctor Who reference in class and only having a couple of other students get it. That's very appealing.

I really don't understand the hate towards the Muggleborn headcanons - I think they're great!

I haven't come across what you're talking about, but I do like fics that are a more realistic exploration of how Muggleborns would probably behave at Hogwarts and after. My daughter is eleven right now; I have a really hard time believing that she'd be utterly fine with leaving all our technology and everything else behind to go wear a Victorian frock coat and write with quills. I mean, magic is cool and the magical world is cool, and she'd have plenty to occupy her, but I can see her missing a lot about the convenience and efficiency of the Muggle world, not to mention that she's already lived in that world for more than a decade.

I think the fic I've read that best addresses this is In Loco Parentis with Hermione as the POV character.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's basically what these posts are. Little blurbs highlighting the massive culture shock that's never really acknowledged in the books except to talk abot how neat and quirky everything is, and envisioning all the Muggleborn kids who've been thrown into this world they know nothing about bonding with each other over technology and pop culture knowledge that they collectively remember but nobody else here does.

agreed. some of these are interesting and I always liked that Dean kept liking football, or that Hermione studied Muggle class.

but these posts somehow lord it over dumwitted "pure blooded" wizards, kinda like feeling self-righteous about an oppression that is purely fictional.

as if stuff like a magic Internet wouldn't be invented, especially after a big tide like the war against Voldemord.
all the actual muggleborn wizards seemed pretty enthusiastic about being part of both worlds.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
i kind of see them as jokes? because lbr, if someone got howler-rickrolled, odds are the "purebloods" wouldn't get it, just given the amount of ignorance towards the muggle world even muggle-friendly wizarding families like the weasleys show.

I mostly just think they should be labeled differently. Instead of having them be "muggleborn headcanons," they're much closer to "muggleborn headcanons, assuming muggleborns are like me and my friends and have our interests." They're basically what would happen if the echo chamber of tumblr was at Hogwarts, which doesn't have much in common with any individual school-age child I've ever seen.

I never got the impression that these posts were about 'how much cooler muggle-borns are' but are just silly ideas about what muggle-borns would do at Hogwarts, because it was never fleshed out much.

But god forbid people have fun on the internet right?

Eh, they just remind me of being a goth teenager. That embarrassing point in my life where I spent entirely too much time declaring how much I didn't give a shit what people thought of me and how much I enjoyed acting "weird" to freak out the "normies". I grew out of it, they will too. It's harmless kid stuff.

I think you're totally off base with the 'Murika accusations. That seems really random to me.

Unless you don't think British teens enjoy wifi and tv shows and Pokemon either, or whatever is in the muggleborn post of the day going around tumblr.

Anyway, HP text posts on tumblr tend to be canonically inaccurate half the time, which bugs me more. Electricity doesn't work at Hogwarts.

They're mostly just really unimaginative and repetitive, but hey, if they make people happy. I just don't see the appeal.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty over "head canons" myself. Tumblr killed the fine art of head canons and the fiction it drives.
