Exactly! There has to be quite a bit of acting in it. I mean I startle just like everyone else but that level of scared that comes out of a person every single time no matter what, my belief in their fright is suspended.

Markiplier is a great example of the over-acting. I've seen some of his work and enjoyed it but good god he needs to turn down the faking a little. It's what kept me from actually subscribing.

it's pretty easy to get over enthusiastic and make ridiculous faces/screaming in front of a camera, nothing award worthy

pewdipie does that shit all the fucking time and he's the most subscribed youtuber (not that i think pewdipie is any good)

He gets by making crass jokes and acting and screaming really fakely and badly. Mark actually comes across as genuine, is my point.

I think it's probably because of the presence of the mic; most LPers narrate everything, so if they get a bit scared it comes out more over the top since it's voiced aloud (that happens to me, at least, if I'm talking and gaming at the same time). It also helps that the reaction is what the audience is typically looking for, like you mentioned.

I'll explain it a bit more, then, to help even further understand. Basically, LPers tend to turn the mics up to catch even their whispers clearly because sometimes you go quiet when you get immersed correctly. This has the unfortunate side-effect of your louder reactions seeming... TOO loud and in-your-face. It absolutely doesn't mean they're acting, just that mics currently don't scale to volume that I'm aware of.

Watch the faces of someone LPing, it takes a lot to act out genuine fright.
