Seriously. He never really bitched before this.

(And I cannot for the life of me believe that a 900 year old Time Lord fell completely in love forever with a 19 year old British shop girl. So that's not the reason he won't shut up.)

Poor Martha. She really need to smack him with a chair or something.

He had to say good-bye to his grand-daughter for goodness sake.

Well, that's what Donna is for - to give the man a good smack upside the head every five minutes or so! Rusty needs to get his head out of his ass and think of better plot-lines for this new season - he's turning it into a harem series.

For serious! There were so many other Companions that he loved. I blame it on this regeneration's personality. Nine wouldn't have been nearly so obsessed.

Yay, Donna! And her boobs! She can smack him aorund, and then he can stare at her amazing cleavage for a while. It'll be soothing to his Poor Wounded Soul (tm).

Give the man a Care-Bear or something to hug and then maybe we can get back on track. And once he finishes staring, Donna can whack him yet again! :D Maybe after a few fifty or so whacks he'll grow out of this and get on with it.

I've only seen a tiny bit of Four and Romana, but I think that at some point or another, they definately had a relationship. Em...of that sort.

I just think one of the reasons that he can't shut up about Rose, while we haven't heard him mention Romana at all is that Rose was pulled from him unexpectedly, before they ever actually acknowledged how they felt. Or before he did. And despite the fact that Ten was always reminding Rose that he was going to outlive her like woah, I think that the more childish part of his mind (childish? Ten? Never!) sort of felt like she would be around for ever, and took her presence for granted. The whole "well, I've got time" thing.

tl;dr=The Doctor's relationship with Rose got cut off in its height, when they were both in a heady, almost honey-moonish stage.

With Romana, it seemed more like a very adult relationship that had a chance to run its course. The romance, if there was any (I think so!), probably ended on their own terms, instead of being cut off in the middle, like Rose.

Which I think is the case for a lot of the companions. I mean some died and left on unexpected terms and all that, but I think with Rose he'd really got to the point of taking her always being at his side for granted. Ten sort of seemed like he regenerated into a bit of a ladies man...

Also, I think the Doctor knew that Martha felt the way she did about him (after awhile, anyway), and that was why he kept talking about Rose. You ever constantly talk about a boyfriend or an ex when someone you're just not interested in is interested in you. Sort of a "do not want" without having to actually say it.

That isn't what is being said at all.

The problem with series three was that Martha was trying to be as helpful as possible with everything that happened, but most of the time Theta was off wondering what Rose would do in the situation or some such.

Dude, I don't ship Martha/Ten. If I needed someone who understood him, I'd go for Romana-- hello, TIME LORD.

Also, Martha did get the short end of the stick, Companion-wise. She went to all the places he took Rose, got to be a servant for months on end, and had to hear the Doctor talk about Rose constantly. Yeah, great ways to boost one's confidence.

I thought he wouldn't shut up about her because his association got her stuck in an alternate plane and while he was very, very fond of her, he didn't love her (if not why the hell burn up a sun and NOT say it to someone you are quite likely to never, EVER, see again?)

He probably fell for Martha the minute he set eyes on her and couldn't deal with it AT ALL so he had start treating Martha how he felt he should have treated Rose (instead of encouraging her belief in them being togetehr forever). Meanwhile Rose - with her NOT being there anymore - can have her history totally rewritten mentally by the Doctor and be completely built up in his mind as the best thing ever - to cover his guilt over feeling that he really just fucked up her life. And, of course, to stop him dealing with whatever he feels toward Martha - so that basically she'll get tired of it and leave. Which she did. Mission accomplished.

Translation: time lord in utter denial acts like a complete asshole. Again. Just in a different way, and with a person who doesn't deserve it.

Sadly, the writers are more likely to retcon this as Rose *actually* being superlative than the Doctor being full of shit.

YK, I don't think he was actually in love with either of them. I'm trying very hard to think that Ten just has a very codependent personality. Because god knows he's done a lot worse to his companions than drop them in an alternate universe with everyone they've ever loved. I mean, what he did to Rose was fucked up, but in the grand scheme of things, not nearly as bad as some of the other stuff he's dealt with. So a lot of it is him just being very clingy and imprinting on Rose, and then she gets gone and he's all off-kilter.

And also, RTD apparently identifies with Rose and cannot let her go. She did get to be a bit overmuch by the end of S2...

Then that's just RTD's issues bleeding all over this particular show, because I'm sure he's written Rose into his other work too.

I wouldn't mind the Doctor loving Rose in particular - there's no reason why he couldn't or wouldn't - but can't they at least TRY to make it not only make sense in the scheme of the story the audience has followed in the new series AS WELL AS the history of the show as it stands?

It just doesn't track that stranding Rose when he's watched other characters die and stuff without really pausing for breath - should reach the mammoth predonderance of super significance we've been seeing for the last year or so. It just jerks me right out of the story every time she's mentioned now because I keep thinking but how come he didn't remember all those other companions like this. Even calling it 'epic, love, forever' doesn't make it feasible to me.

It does kind of work in my mind if he's in denial and making it of super-significance because that's how he feels he *should* feel about it. When really, he does care - just not half as much as he led Rose to believ.

But yeah, everyone can call it super epic love, it just doesn't track for me, so that's not what I call it.
