I have to admit, my sympathies for him are limited since he knew something was wrong with his shoulder long before it became a huge issue and just ignored it. Hell, he increased the difficulty of his training!

Like, it's his own fault it got so bad that it ruined his chances of swimming professionally! I mean, geez, it wasn't like it was an unexpected accident or anything.

Yeah, it's not like parents, especially those in Japan (and a number of Asian countries), pressure the fuck out of their kids to hide their pain and push through despite injuries. He's totally not a high school kid from a country with known high suicide rates for school pressures. Yup.

that's a valid point that didn't actually cross my mind before

but

his entire motivation to swim so hard was (SPOILER --- ?) to swim with Rin again. Is that really valid to argue if the only pressure he acknowledged was self-imposed?

* I do agree in a way, thinking a little more, because if his parents bothered to intervene we'd have a very different story on our hands. but then these are vaguely absent anime parents we're talking about

lol you sound like someone who has never lived in Japan.

As someone who has lived here a long time, in rural and metropolitan environments, and interacted with kids in both as well as their parents, you're full of shit if you subscribe to the ~HARD-ASS ASIAN PARENTS RAWR TIGER MOM~ stereotype.
