So what's his story? Is it a generic sob story or what?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
well, a generic sports sob story. he has a severe and chronic sports injury that has pretty much ruined his chances of swimming professionally

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
*I meant "severe and chronic shoulder injury"

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, thanks. Then I can't say that I really blame OP for feeling that way. Those stories are so prevalent that I can't really fault OP for not giving a shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
And then you learn he brought it on himself--pushed himself even when he knew he was ruining his future in the sport. I loved his character in the novels, but I've lost pretty much all sympathy for him. Especially after how he's treated Haru.

Everyone says Rin's being a shit friend to him, but Sousuke's the one being the shitty friend.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for angst (okay, I totally am) but I liked it and did find parts of it really sweet. It isn't exactly anything new though, so I can see why it might not be of interest to you.

I have to admit, my sympathies for him are limited since he knew something was wrong with his shoulder long before it became a huge issue and just ignored it. Hell, he increased the difficulty of his training!

Like, it's his own fault it got so bad that it ruined his chances of swimming professionally! I mean, geez, it wasn't like it was an unexpected accident or anything.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not like parents, especially those in Japan (and a number of Asian countries), pressure the fuck out of their kids to hide their pain and push through despite injuries. He's totally not a high school kid from a country with known high suicide rates for school pressures. Yup.

nayrt

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
that's a valid point that didn't actually cross my mind before

but

his entire motivation to swim so hard was (SPOILER --- ?) to swim with Rin again. Is that really valid to argue if the only pressure he acknowledged was self-imposed?

lol you sound like someone who has never lived in Japan.

As someone who has lived here a long time, in rural and metropolitan environments, and interacted with kids in both as well as their parents, you're full of shit if you subscribe to the ~HARD-ASS ASIAN PARENTS RAWR TIGER MOM~ stereotype.

jeez it's like I submitted this in my sleep! the fandom's overall heartbreak and agony over this made me feel like the odd one out for being glad we finally could move on to the other characters again. I almost give up on thinking I've had as much fun with this season the first, because the characters I'm watching for have been more or less overlooked plotwise for Free!: Eternal Sousuke, it felt like

I'm still holding out for the end, though, because there's still been great stuff this season, and my whole mood was reversed by how explosive the episode right after was

Exactly! I care about the Iwatobi guys, Samezuka is not important for me at all.

I feel extra sad about it tbh because Rin is my favorite, so Sousuke's relationship with him is all that makes me value the dude. It's not the happiest response to a character because if that weren't the case, my interest really would be barebones. :(

I'm actually glad to see more of Samezuka, because again it's part of Rin's life and all (and I LOVE MOMO oh my god) but my heart is still with Iwatobi first as a unit. Seeing their individual conflicts basically resolved in one swing per episode (excluding Haruka) while Sousuke's stretched through almost the whole season just got tiresome for me.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
While I wasn't crying buckets over his situation, I do like the direction that they took with his character.

With Rin being all friendly this season, there needed to be a foil for Haru, and I'm glad they didn't make Sousuke just some surly swimmer who hates those he competes against and takes stuff way too personally.

I also do have sympathy for his character. I was an athlete in high school/college and I competed with a severe injury that made it worse. It sucks to know that if it wasn't for your body breaking down, you could have achieved so much more. It just feels so unfair. So I get his angst and it's really appropriate, I think, for a sports anime.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wasn't super moved either. I mean, I felt bad, but mostly for Rin and not as much for Sosuke. Plus, injuries are usually a pretty common thing in sports-themed anime.

I sort of agree. Rin made me feel sad with his reaction because I like Rin, but honestly I just don't really give a crap about Sousuke.

We all have things that we are faced with, some emotional type of deal, and it just doesn't hit it's mark. And that's okay. Maybe it just didn't strike a chord with you.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
But when will Makoto pity fuck him? Rebound OTP for the win.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
Why does SouMako even exist?

I just find him bland. All he does is revolve around Rin, and he was conveniently there for last season's important Rin bits, which strikes me as super plot-device-y. So I didn't really care for his problem either (and thought it was stupid that he didn't take better care of his injury).

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought it would be cool for Rin to have a best friend on Samezuka but Sousuke is way too Rin centric that it's off-putting.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was an interesting and rare take on the trope because once Sousuke swam that relay with Rin, he was fine with everything. Swimming competitively was never his dream. He's not the one angsting over it, Rin is.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
I did feel bad for him but I'm not liking Sousuke as much as I anticipated I would.

Nah, that's understandable. KyoAni kept dragging his plot for longer than necessary and he ended up being barely developed as a character. He was kept in the dark for too long, imo. I DID felt bad for him and his shoulder injury drama™, tho.
