I feel it's perfectly legit, to examine claims that something is canonical -- to discuss/debate/challenge the truth or falsity of the claim ... but telling someone their headcanon / fanon is wrong? Nope, nope, nuh-uh.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)This is a huge problem in fandom in general
(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)It must be because you're homophobic, racist, or sexist!
Dislike a particular character?
It's because they're nonwhite, a woman, or poor and you're a bigot!
Don't agree with my interpretation of a scene?
You're twisting facts! You're not allowed to look at something and see the opposite of what I see!

But yeah, some fans get too defensive of their headcanons and that can be very annoying.
That said Ozma of Oz, Hazumu (from Kashimashi), and Aoi from You're Under Arrest, are all close enough to being trans to pass muster, that I do get a bit defensive of them, though I try not to insult people who don't read it that way.

Probably not, but still!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)In the sense that they tolerate trans people but deep down don't see them as someone of their gender- which I think is a "normal" attitude for our society that needs work, but doesn't deserve hate.
if you can identify with said character because they struggle with their gender "role" for example (or anything else that might feel trans* to others), why should that aspect be less accessible to you when they're read as trans, or depicted as trans in fanwork? It just means that you and trans* people have something relatable in common.
yeah, sometimes it annoys me when people claim somebody has to trans in a provocative way that sounds as if they own the character and hope to get objections to be self-righteous. but really, that mostly is due to bad rl past experiences or maybe in some cases victimhood complexes that one shouldn't fuel with attention or pin on actual trans people.

Word, OP.
(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 01:58 am (UTC)(link)Believe it or not, their trans head canons before Tumblr and they didn't cause nearly as many fights or annoyance as they do now.
