Do people actually say that?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
They say it's transphoboc to assume a character is cis

Head canon DOES NOT EQUAL canon. Fandom would be a much less annoying place if people would just remember this simple bit of information.

Exactly.

I feel it's perfectly legit, to examine claims that something is canonical -- to discuss/debate/challenge the truth or falsity of the claim ... but telling someone their headcanon / fanon is wrong? Nope, nope, nuh-uh.

Yes. So much this.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to be problematic (lol) but I think people should find a different background on some of these trans secrets, because it feels like every few months we get a trans secret that uses the trans flags and I have a hard time determining if its the same one that keeps popping up.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Who cares? I don't get why we NEED to root out every possible repeat secret. It's really not a big deal.

This is a huge problem in fandom in general

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't ship what I ship?

It must be because you're homophobic, racist, or sexist!

Dislike a particular character?

It's because they're nonwhite, a woman, or poor and you're a bigot!

Don't agree with my interpretation of a scene?

You're twisting facts! You're not allowed to look at something and see the opposite of what I see!

Some of my, "this character is closet trans," ships actually have nothing to do with gender presentation on screen... but I don't think even when it does that it's usually misogynistic, it's just people seeing things they identify with themselves. Believe me most "out" trans people have a high degree of self awareness, they need to to take that step, so they know there's a difference between wearing a dress and being trans, but one can say relate to Mulan's reflection song, and recognize authorial intent wasn't going in that direction.

But yeah, some fans get too defensive of their headcanons and that can be very annoying.

That said Ozma of Oz, Hazumu (from Kashimashi), and Aoi from You're Under Arrest, are all close enough to being trans to pass muster, that I do get a bit defensive of them, though I try not to insult people who don't read it that way.

e: Canonically, I mean? I thought she was!

I'm starting to feel a little nervous about writing a character as trans in one of my stories. It's not a "headcanon," it's just something I wanted to try out, but I'm afraid folks will think I'm insisting she HAS to be trans. (Thankfully, reaction so far has mostly been positive.)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry about it, you should be fine!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, if you tag it properly, I think nobody has the right to complain when they read it anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I just find the angled text against the striped background to be jarring.

You use of the name (even though it's pretty generic) made me wonder if you had the Billy from here in mind.

Probably not, but still!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
well, people who are against a trans interpretation because then THEY then can't identify with said character all of sudden do come off as transphobic to me...

In the sense that they tolerate trans people but deep down don't see them as someone of their gender- which I think is a "normal" attitude for our society that needs work, but doesn't deserve hate.

if you can identify with said character because they struggle with their gender "role" for example (or anything else that might feel trans* to others), why should that aspect be less accessible to you when they're read as trans, or depicted as trans in fanwork? It just means that you and trans* people have something relatable in common.

yeah, sometimes it annoys me when people claim somebody has to trans in a provocative way that sounds as if they own the character and hope to get objections to be self-righteous. but really, that mostly is due to bad rl past experiences or maybe in some cases victimhood complexes that one shouldn't fuel with attention or pin on actual trans people.

This.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
trans headcanons are gender essentialist because transsexuality in an of itself is gender essentialist tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
so are cis headcanons then tbh

Yes. This is the reason most people are annoyed by trans head canons, not that they exist. Tumblr has taken the beautiful thing that were head canons and made them into a pissing contest and a way to turn people against one another.

Believe it or not, their trans head canons before Tumblr and they didn't cause nearly as many fights or annoyance as they do now.

I'm starting to think I must be really good at avoiding silly people on Tumblr because I have never seen anyone argue this. Either that or the minority that do are so tiny as to be negligible but everyone pretends they're out of control anyway.
