Factual Errors in Otherwise Great Fics...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Currently reading this: http://archiveofourown.org/works/1973673?view_full_work=true

And while it's an absolutely AMAZING fic, I just can't help but to be irritated by some of the clearly incorrect statements about the human body.

Tony got shot in the ABDOMEN. The AORTA is in the CHEST. It's the blood vessel directly connected to the heart. You get nicked in the aorta and YOU DEAD SON.

It just stands out to me so much more because this fic is otherwise spectacularly written. I kind of want to let the author know, but I feel like I'm nitpicking.

Anyone else run across something like this? What did you do?

>shot in the abdomen
>nicked in the aorta

i just burst out laughing. yes, you should tell them, that's bad enough to be funny

Maybe it was just a really, really, really sharp angle.

I've seen two works of fiction (a film and a pastiche written by an amateur) where Joe Bell was for some inexplicable reason given a beard. I don't know what people's deal is; he never had any. More mysteriously still, the screenwriter of the film in question is an awesome Holmesian who knows a lot about the backstory?? IDK.

But aorta in the abdomen does sound nasty :D And omg, this is bromance-y gen! Suddenly I'm regretting the fact that I'm no longer interested in Avengers fic. I'd have read the hell out of this a year ago.

There's SO MANY FEELS

I am happily drowning in well-written feels.

And ALL of the characters are SO well written. It's not just one kind of character feel -- it's all of them.

I love this fic so much. But that error…man did it make me want to face palm.

I don't have a link, but I once read a fic where the author described the hymen as being inside the vaginal canal. Like, deep enough in that the woman could be fingered without the guy touching it (he was described as coming up against it and then backing off so that he wouldn't break it and make her not a virgin). That's so ridiculously wrong that it was actually offensive to me. I wrote a review that was like "that's not where the hymen is," and then I stopped reading completely.

SA

Oh, I should add that the fic was fine and quite enjoyable up until the sex scene.

It wouldn't stop me from reading (unless it was a plot critical detail) but I never know how to respond to things like this when it's clear the author has worked so hard on the fic. And instead of showing appreciation, I feel like I'm just poking at the few bruises that, in the grand scheme of things, don't really mar an otherwise excellent piece of fiction.

Oh man, I've come across that one more than once. Like the guy will pause during penetration before he pushes past 'the final barrier'.

I'm not sure if you'd call this a factual error, but the very last chapter of a great Friendship is Magic fanfic casually mentioned ponies eating meatloaf.

In my old school, that would have been considered cannibalism.

Pinkie eats hot dogs in canon.

Not only are you nitpicking, but you're only half right. The aorta passes through the diaphragm into the abdomen, where it's known as the abdominal aorta.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdominal_aorta#mediaviewer/File:Gray531.png

Now, rupture of the abdominal aorta has a 90 percent fatality rate, but 90 percent =/= 100 percent, so to borrow your phrase, YOU MOSTLY DEAD SON.

Ahhh…

That's a good point. I just couldn't fathom that this writer actually meant the aorta (the blood vessel stemming from the heart) getting hit.

And then it subsequently getting plugged by Steve's finger while Bruce works to fix it.

But you're right. It isn't technically a factual error. Makes me feel better about the fic, but quite a bit stupider myself.

Tbh this depends on the context. If the writer is describing the situation from the viewpoint of someone with medical knowledge (or in third-person omniscient narration), yours is a fair point. But if they just randomly mention the damaged aorta of someone who was shot in the abdomen or have a character with little to no medical knowledge do that, they're likely making a mistake.

Wouldn't the inferior vena cava getting hit make a "little" more sense though? Considering the blood pressure isn't nearly as high?

Whatever…I'm just hung up on this because the fic is really good otherwise.

I read an otherwise well-written House fic in which he had sex with a hysterectomy patient too soon after her surgery.

Well, I mean, if you want to be purely technical, the aorta comes out of the heart, curves around, and goes all the way down to branch at your legs. It gets extra names thrown on, like 'descending thoracic aorta' and 'abdominal aorta' but it's all hooked together.

I'm not sure if it would have been a great fic or not (summary sounded cute), but I actually ventured into the Haikyuu!! AO3 territory for the first time today. One fic I clicked started with something like "they had won their game by just one point".
Look, if you can't even be bothered to remember the most rudimentary rules of the sport this show is about, I can't be bothered to read your story.

/kind of a sourpuss but every single story I tried was terrible as well so I got annoyed.

Re: Factual Errors in Otherwise Great Fics...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically, the aorta does go into the abdomen where it branches off. :P

Re: Factual Errors in Otherwise Great Fics...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well the fic itself isn't great, but the main character loses sight in one of his eyes and somehow he's able to magically still be spot-on while shooting a gun. I'm pretty sure that if you lost an eye, depth perception would be a major challenge and you'd have to re-train yourself for that. But that was enough for me to back the fuck out of that one.

Pretty much any time guns are mentioned something's going to be wrong.

And I've been in a pretty great military fandom, but I'm always disappointed when no one knows that combat uniform pants don't zip.

What fandom? The one I'm in half the kids are in the military so it's rare to see that many mistakes.
