A balanced opinion on John Green?! Get out of here with your sensible thoughts! This is the internet!

I thought it was the painting of him as the most progressive writer ever that came first, and the hate was the backlash against it.

Who fucking knows on the Internet. This is why the Internet is terrible, you know? A bunch of people see something getting hyped, and they don't think it's going that good, and so they start criticizing it. And some of them go too far, and so some people come in and start defending it, and some of them go too far. And it's an endless cycle of pointless bullshit and everyone on both sides thinks that they're only reacting rationally to the ludicrous excesses of the other side. Fuck the goddamn Internet.

I agree he's not the greatest ever or anything. I actually prefer his video series on youtube to his books. But I don't understand his hatedom. He just seems so…innocuous really. I'm guessing it's hype backlash?

Saaame. I've read a couple of his books and enjoyed them (though they're hardly Shakespeare). So I'm not a big fan or anything, but, to me, he just seems like a sweet guy who's done very well for himself and doesn't seem to have let the fame/money go to his head.

being a good fiction writer has nothing to do with being a good person.

John Green really always seemed like a really nice dude. His books are pretty samey and tend to have themes that are incredibly twee. I wish he'd stick to nonfiction.

Yeah, this. He seems like a nice enough person, but I have basically no interest in reading his works. Characters who die in a tragic yet meaningful fashion that helps enlighten all around them, which seems to be the main topic of several of his books, is not anything I want to read.

Two of his books, let's be honest. And those two books? While sharing that theme? Were very different.

Were they? I'm talking in terms if the reading experience, not accusing Green of literally self plagiarizing or something.

Yeah, I mean. They were completely different stories. Just because they share a thematic element doesn't mean the reading experience is identical.

My thoughts exactly. He seems like a sweet guy, I just have no interest in his books.

I wish The Fault in Our Stars appealed to me because I really want to see more characters with disabilities, but those particular characters annoyed me when I tried to read it. I'm glad the book is getting so much exposure though and I agree that the backlash against Green gets ridiculous at times.

It seemed like the MCs' disabilities only came up for dramatic convenience in tfios, and were forgotten when they might get in the way of whatever was happening. Not a great way to write disabled characters, but different strokes.

Because, most people who have similar disabilities fail to carry on with their lives but are instead in a constant state of "I have a disability. I have a disability. I have a disability," am I right?
