Translation: Waaaahhh! Someone's talking about a thing I don't want to talk about, make them stooooooop!

Honestly, it's fine to not care about secrets. I don't care about most of the secrets in a given post. But why bother to whine to other people because they've committed the terrible crime of caring about a thing you don't care about?

So....?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-18 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I really don't understand why people enjoy disliking characters so much. What exactly is the point of actively disliking a character? I mean, what's the appeal?

It certainly isn't that people just can't help disliking characters, one look at the way character-hate works makes the idea that people "just can't help" hating a character totally ludicrous. So, why do it? IDGI.

I don't think anyone goes into it intentionally wanting to dislike characters (at least I don't think so). Sometimes a character rubs you the wrong way, though. Like, I really don't like Xander on Buffy. I don't try to dislike him, I just do. He has personality traits that I don't like that are never really called out by canon. And I wouldn't say I like disliking him, but I do like ranting about him because I like talking about the reasons I don't like him.

I do think there are people who enjoy disliking characters and actively intensify their dislike to the point of bashing, though I still don't think those people start out wanting to dislike anyone. But that isn't everyone who dislikes characters.

Because it's fun? I don't think it's really deep, or in need of deep reasoning, man.

I bet having canonical proof is probably a bonus, especially if you haven't already pinpointed what is you might dislike about someone/something. IMO, I do think hating a character without know exactly why is pretty normal too.

Hm...actually, I don't think it's a choice? I mean, it isn't for me. I don't enjoy disliking characters, it just happens? Mostly because I recognise behaviour that I dislike in others, or myself. That's my best guess. Not entirely rational, and certainly totally subjective.

To be honest, I dislike most characters in movies/shows/books/etc, and I'm always really really happy when I find characters I like. Good thing there's such a variety out there, because I'm not the hate-watching type - I'd rather drop and start watching/reading something else.

Of course, when it comes to things where I really love one character but dislike all the others, I'm pretty much screwed. Because then I have to weigh my love against my dislike to decide if I let myself suffer through the thing or not. *g*

I'm speaking in extremes here, of course, trying to make my feelings a bit clearer. There are enough characters I'm feeling mostly indifferent about.

I find it interesting to juxtapose this episode against the later Sarah Jane Adventures episode "Death of the Doctor" where Sarah and Jo meet Eleven and when Jo finds out Sarah and the Doctor have met multiple times since they originally parted ways, Jo says "Wow, he must really like you" because Jo never got that and Sarah's expression is like "Shit, yeah, I guess I can't complain." I love that Jo is so non-catty about it and more in awe that outright jealous and Sarah's reaction is subdued.

(I don't think Jo was aware of how large the time gap between "The Hand of Fear" and "School Reunion" was or that the "School Reunion" reunion was purely accidental, but still, Sarah got a lot more than any other companion to date save the Brigadier - and arguably River, although that's a very different situation - when it comes to reunions with the Doctor.)

I hate Regina from Once Upon a Time because she acts almost exactly like my abusive ex-boyfriend. I enjoy listening to people trash her because it feels like I'm getting a little bit of revenge on the guy who ruined my life for a couple of years. It might be immature, but no one's getting hurt.

Hahaaha this is hilarious! I'm glad you feel vindicated or whatever, because I'd like to think you had your villainous-sounding "thank you for proving me right moment" while swirling a glass of brandy while looking down your nose at a television screen.

I swear I must be the only person who didn't get love triangle out of that episode so much as power struggle (okay, maybe with SOME love triangle on Rose's side). Rose finds out there's been other girls like her, and they were left behind to grow old. Meanwhile Sarah Jane, now a middle-aged reporter, sees a young woman getting to do the things she once did. It was a coming-of-age story to me, not a love cat fight.

I got both. I think it was mostly a power struggle, but the writers intended, at least on Rose's part, for their to be some romantic jealousy.

I never felt like Rose had to be perfect.

It let her character grow. It let her realize she had these feelings and needed to deal with them. She and S.J. were friends by the end, which I liked alot.

Character growth and fallible characters (especially on Dr. Who) win for me over perfect characters all the time.

It's one reason I'm finding it still difficult to warm up to the current companion. She seems so perfect. Let me see her flaws! I think they're trying to work on it, but the writing really needs to improve IMO. My dad won't even watch it with me anymore, he's so fed up. :( And he had no problem with most of the Doctors or companions.

I love Rose and Sarah Jane, but I've gotta laugh when everyone focuses on Rose's behavior while ignoring Sarah Jane's. ESPECIALLY because Sarah Jane started it.

Also like... I think people tend to ignore the context and WHY Rose was so unsettled.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-19 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
The dude told her he's like 900 and something years old, she really thought he waited all this time just so she'd grow up to be 19 and then he'd come and take her and she'd be the only special one, gee.

Rose, the pudding brain.

what about the fact that Sarah Jane was equally petty despite the fact that she was an almost sixty year old woman?
