I don't care if the costumes are historically accurate or not; the dresses are some of the best parts of the show (and I really like the show, lol)!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Which show would that be?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like Reign, maybe?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's Reign

I'm not sure if I love or hate the wtfery that is the costuming on that show, but I can't stop staring at it!

I wouldn't mind if they weren't 100% historically accurate, but at worst some of the stuff looks like half of it was raided from the wardrobe of a local amateur theatre and half from the closing sale of a small town prom dress store. It seems like the costuming department is either a) high as fuck or b) on really small budget or c) both.

It also makes me sad because 1550s-1560s fashions were hella epic, and there's so much they could do with the aesthetic while maintaining a more casual vibe.

This is the CW. They 1) cannot afford hella epic and 2) have a vested interest in putting characters in "aspirational" clothes, i.e., things that are reminiscent of what their advertisers sell.

(I realize that sounds negative re: CW, but I think it's smart.)

:nods:

I suppose it's not particularly period, but it is very pretty, and pretty close to stylish modern clothing.

Oh, I know. I just wish the stuff Mary's poor ladies-in-waiting are frequently put in weren't so garishly ugly (and if that's where current fashion trends lie I'll happily be untrendy).

Also, freaking Vampire Diaries did better Renaissance clothing, and it's a CW show too. Couldn't they at least recycle some of those gowns?

iirc, Reign in particular has an official website (or maybe it's an app?) that lists where you can buy all the more modern-looking clothes on the show. Most of the ones I remember are from Forever 21.

(Does the CW have Pretty Little Liars too? Because that would explain why it has a tie-in clothing line.)

This. To each their own, obviously, but the costumes were a big part of why I just cannot stand this show.

It's sad because it does otherwise have a lot of potential as a quality drama, actually. But guess the target demographic means the garish costumes and obnoxious indie pop soundtrack has to stay (which I think is underestimating said demographic, but there ya go). :/

+1 I should learn to stop expecting American shows to stop treating historical Europe like a fantasy land combined with a wardrobe straight from pinterest.

I keep hoping this show will come to Netflix. I watched the pilot and liked it a lot but kept forgetting to DVR it and we don't have CW on Demand.

I'm pretty sure it's on Hulu?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
there's a safe torrent of it on the pirate bay. we just downloaded it and are halfway through, trying to crash course it before the next season starts october 2!

Anna Popplewell is in this?! Huh, didn't realize that. She and Adelaide Kane look gorgeous here. Maybe if it comes to Netflix I'll watch it. Eventually.

So now kids are so insular they can't even deal with historical fashion? Ffs.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
They're costumes for a fiction show, chill.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I love historical clothing, researching and general accuracy, and this show makes me have a physical, "Oh god no stop" reaction.

Sure, make a Gossip-Girl-esque historical AU, but don't pretend you care a damn about Mary Stuart or history. They don't even try and aim for 1500's inspired fashion, there's dresses from the 1700's and 1800's in there and it just looks ridiculous.

I can't find a source atm, but the costume designer said something along the lines of "Girls aren't interested in history". Well fuck you too.

I hate this show.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I hate that attitude from people who create shows like this, it's so narrow minded. I loved history as long as I've been able to read, and I would've loved historically accurate programs.

Yeah, let's see a source, because I have read a ton of interviews with the costume designers for Reign and they have never fucking ever said anything even close to this.

As for "pretending to give a damn", they have been up front about the clothing from the beginning, and never expected anyone to think they were trying for historically accurate.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I think AYRT got them confused with Adelaide Kane. She's been saying something similar (It’s entertainment – it’s not the History Channel. How many teenage girls do you know who are obsessed with history?):
