I'm all for a week dedicated to reading banned books and all, but must you use the acronym for Banned Books Week?

Sorry for derailing your thread, but I just can't wrap my head around the concept of banned books at all. Can anybody explain to me how this kind of censorship is just accepted like that?

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not accepted? Reading banned books is meant to be a show of protest against the whole thing.

But the books are still removed from school libraries, right? My understanding of the whole thing is this: Parents complain about certain books being made available to their children, the school administration wants to please these parents and forces the librarian to remove the offending books or not buy them in the first place (of course not in all school libraries just the specific ones, where the parents are complaining). Librarians are understandably upset about this, they keep a list of these books and encourage people to read them anyway which is what Banned Books Week is about. Am I mistaken about this? If the books were still available despite parents complaining they wouldn't be banned after all.

You're right, but people do get angry about it. It usually causes quite a stir with people arguing passionately on both sides. Also iirc, banned books week (is it really just a week? for some reason I thought it was a month) also includes books that people have attempted to ban. The book often sees a boost in sales, too.

Re: Vent thread

It refers more to books being banned (or, more often, being pushed to be banned by angry parents) from the curriculum of a school or from a library's selection or something similar, not from being read nationwide or anything like that. Most students who deal with that nowadays "just accept" it because it largely doesn't affect their ability to read the book if they really want to-- just because it's not assigned in their school district doesn't mean they can't find it in like 10 other places-- or don't care either way, and those schools or whatever have usually complied just to avoid backlash.

I don't support censorship etc., but the name "Banned Books Week" can make it come off as much more dramatic than it actually is, given that the books are often banned on a comparatively small scale. Granted, the situation was worse and harder to get around like 50 years ago, but still.

(also obviously this post has some huge generalizations but I think I mainly got the point across)

I get that it's just a few schools and not a "you'll be a thought criminal" situation. But it's still censorship.

I'm studying to become a librarian and while I have no doubt about censorship also happening in my country, it's not done with such an obvious "of course we're doing it; it's for the children" attitude. I've heard stories of librarians being pressured into presenting an issue more to the liking of the mayor. But that's done in secret because everyone is aware that it's censorship and that's a bad, bad thing. But in the US you'll have people openly arguing in favor of banning books from schools as if there's nothing wrong about it. That's what confuses me.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Usually the ones who want books to be censored don't actually refer to what they're doing as censorship-- they just view the book as inherently damaging and treat the concept of it not being allowed as a given. Those who are against that definitely view and refer to it as censorship. Hence the whole existence of the Banned Books Week tradition-- for every large group pushing to get a book out of a library or something, there are similar groups supporting it and not backing down.

What I'm trying to say is that censorship isn't being openly celebrated so much as sort of masked behind "concern" or religion or similar beliefs, which is why it's harder to deal with across the country than just outright "banning" would be.

maybe I'm naive but..what does BBW also stand for.

Also ahh banned books. I remember for a college paper I did a paper about book banning in high school and I had to read stuff for both sides. I swear almost every essay that was "pro book banning" was written my hyper-offended middle aged moms who didn't seem to get 'context' and went on about "omg muh kid is reading this filth and trash" and didn't seem to consider the notion of actually sitting down and actually talking with their kid.

There was like maybe ONE that wasn't like this. It was hilarious reading these adults say things like "trashy books written by loser writers".

Lady, are you like 14?

eheh sorry for my ramble there.

I was confused too, no worries.

And yes at the failure to understand context! Like when Harry Potter critics used to quote head!Voldemort's "there is no good or evil" line. Well... the guy is a racist wizard who attempted murder on a toddler. He's not going to say nice things.

Yeah.

I mean the lady was all "one of his teachers said that" Yeah. and that teacher turned out to be the villain

One of the things she would have known if she read the book. Which...um she she admitted she didn't
