Re: Things that annoy you about TV shows or movies

21 Jump Street actually addressed this but I HATE when someone gets arrested and all you hear is "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, an attorney will be appointed to you." Sometimes they also add in, "Do you understand these rights?" That's only about half of the Miranda Rights. It always seems so lazy, especially when I watch Law and Order: SVU marathons. It becomes really noticeable.

I'm sure there are a lot of other things but I'm kind of brain dead right now.

Um, believe it or not, but that is pretty much the minimal warning. There is no set language and each state makes its own rules as long as the suspect is told that:

1. You have the right to remain silent.
2. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law.
3. You have the right to have an attorney present.
4. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you.

There are more extensive ones, but as long as everything in the above list is covered, that's all that is needed.

Wait, what? Those are the Miranda rights: 1.) You have the right to remain silent. 2.) Anything you do say can be used against you. 3.) You have the right to an attorney. 4.) You have the right, if you cannot afford an attorney, to have one appointed for you at no cost to you. And then some waiver question, along the lines of what you've written above. There's... no other part to the Miranda rights. Some of them have further explanations, but cops are not required to explain the rights-- only to list the four, as described above. I'm not sure what the "other half" would be?
