Things that annoy you about TV shows or movies

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
In honor of the upcoming TV shows, what are the little things that bother you in TV shows?

I roll my eyes every time a detective walks up to a suspect and calls their name. They never wait until they are within grabbing distance. No, it's always just far enough away that the suspect can run away but the detectives can still catch them. Like, seriously, wait that extra thirty seconds before announcing your presence so you can grab the guy before he bolts.

How about you? What annoys you?

Do you pronounce it or it is silent?

You mean like M*A*S*H? What show?

In honour of Downton Abbey (running in the background right now): I hate it when character development is retconned. Especially if it happens over and over again.

Can you be more specific? Downton Abbey has SO many instances of this.

Classic L&O and ER were like the golden age of procedural television. Only shows I never got sick of seeing over and over again.

Commercials when it is something not previously recorded. All the filler crap when watching House Hunters. Just show me the damn houses, which one they pick and the before/after.

The "Last Time On...." because they will show something from like 7 episodes ago and spoils you about surprise characters and whatnot.

I get mad when they include those "last time on" on the DVD release because hey, I just watched that episode thank you, I know what's going on.

And yeah, House Hunters, show me more houses and less history about the area or them being annoying. (House Hunters International is the worst when it comes to too much filler)

Something that bothers me about movies is how quick people are to call something a hit or a flop.

It took Guardians a little more than a month to get 300mil domestic in a rather slow summer movie season - "ohhh it's a hit!" - Eh. It's Marvel, it came out during a slow summer, what else did you expect. Despite how deeply I dislike these movies, Avengers was a hit. Frozen was a hit. The Hunger Games was a hit.

Now The Giver being out for a month and a half and only making 43 mil domestic? That's a flop. It probably made back its budget but let's be real, they expected this quintessential middle school reading book to make bank, and it simply didn't.

That Fairly Oddparents started out with with some interesting world-building stuff, but recently has gotten so cracky I end up not acknowledging half of it.

Also when cool best friend characters with potential end up getting saddled with the role of "butt monkey" because either the show people don't know what to do with them or are more interested in making the show funny than developing the character? (A moment of silence for Tucker Foley and his envy of ghost powers and Danny)

Also in honor of Downton Abbey, when potential storylines that could be really really amazing are dropped in favor of something that's boring, stupid, and has already been done.

*A moment of silence for Mary's friendship/kindred-spirit-ness with Branson that never happened, and her decision to be a hands-on mother and assertive single woman in charge of property that never materialized, because she was too busy wasting her time mindlessly juggling these two bland suitors all through season 4*

The calling their name from 3 feet away thing annoys my mum so much. Every time that happens, she has to point that out.

What annoys me are very minor things that are just left out for convenience but wouldn't be very hard to include actually. Like characters never locking their car after getting out or characters agreeing to meet but never stating a time and place for the meeting.

Why in honor of them?)

That they could be cancelled no matter how much I like them.
And I hate a documentary style shaky camera.
Gritty grayish coloring.
Too polished look with perfectly combed hair and lots of make-up.
Chracters in bed with make-up. Supposedly sick characters wearing make-up.
Pairings I dislike becoming canon.
Not to be a social justice crazy girl, but no interesting female characters is a big stroke against.
Famous guest stars. ]
Food. It makes me hungry.
Chases - because boring, if it's not James Bond with a flying Aston Martin.
Long kissing sequences.
Mustashes.
Clothes that look completely new.
White walls in the hero's apartment.
Product placement. Smh. Especially if there's a line or two esp. for this.

Can't think of anything else atm.

- How many are dark action/sci fi anymore, or shitty comedy. I miss good comedy. And I want more dramedies. Or even something in between a comedy and a dramedy.

- The two main female characters automatically hating each other, unless there's a reason like they're sisters (what? Sisters fight) or opposite sides of a fight or something. I remember seeing previews for one show a few years back, and in the previews it showed the standard nasty bitchy woman who was all "don't go after my man!" Nope, sorry. Respect the Bechdel Test, y'know?

Similar to the retcon mentioned above, characters suddenly acting in ways that are the opposite of how they were before, or flanderization. If it's gradual or the show's been long-running I'm actually more tolerant of this than some people - people change. But sometimes characters' personalities seem to depend on the episode, or they'll just change at random.

Same with character relationships. In some episodes, Mary and Sue will be established to be really close; in others, they act like they barely know each other, or really only interact within the environment the show is primary set in. Glee did this all the time, although I hesitate to use Glee because in the end, I think the show is more about whatever works for the musical numbers they're doing. (And in fairness, it is a show set in high school, and high schoolers are kinda notorious for the whole "I BFF you/I BFF you not" thing. But usually people have at least one consistent friendship.)

The boxes most Hollywood movies shove characters into.

Main character is usually a white male. He will survive. Love interest is usually a strong female who will inevitably have to be saved by the main character. If she's white, she'll survive. If she's any other race then it's touch and go. Any strong female character who is not saved by a man will die. Any character of a race that's not white will either be saved by the main character, submit to him in some fashion (e.g. following his lead), or will die in the course of the narrative.

The number of films that fit this pattern is terrifying, disgusting and, frankly, boring. Jesus, Hollywood.

I hate it when a show, any type of show (though it usually happens in comedic one) starts out with some fresh ideas but then chucks them out of the window for a romantic plot.

When people are going somewhere they either strongly suspect or know for a fact contains the killer/suspect/monster, and for some reason take no precautions whatsoever before wandering on in there alone to see what's what. The amount of times the lead character or some intrepid investigator has wandered/snuck into a suspect's lair without a) calling for backup or even to let someone know where they are, b) keeping an eye on their surroundings so that the suspect doesn't sneak up on them while they're distracted by all the piles of lovely evidence, or c) wearing gloves/not touching things/not fouling the evidence up/not taking care to minimise the effects of their presence, is very annoying.

Seriously, people. You're going somewhere you KNOW is not safe and may contain evidence/bodies/a killer/a monster, don't just blithely wander in and poke around like nothing bad could possibly happen to you! Especially if you don't actually have authority to do that and/or are actually breaking-and-entering in the process.

It wouldn't be so bad, but a surprising amount of supposedly professional characters from law enforcement or other characters who should honestly know better seem to do this all the time.

The innocent looking guy has no reason to be in the story other then to be the killer. It's just so predictable.

Also people who randomly shout at others for no reason. Use your indoor voice for gods sake. It isn't dramatic just annoying.

I can't stand watching movies on television with commercials. The action and flow gets all chopped up.

And the post-commercial recap dialogue.

21 Jump Street actually addressed this but I HATE when someone gets arrested and all you hear is "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, an attorney will be appointed to you." Sometimes they also add in, "Do you understand these rights?" That's only about half of the Miranda Rights. It always seems so lazy, especially when I watch Law and Order: SVU marathons. It becomes really noticeable.

I'm sure there are a lot of other things but I'm kind of brain dead right now.

People who are supposedly "poor" - and have no back story of being formerly rich - have unrealistically nice/large apartments/houses and never wear the same article of clothing twice. They may pay lip service to living in a "dump" or a "bad neighborhood" but they never have to deal with any actual problems associated with those things, like a chronic cockroach problem or getting broken into. Anything that breaks down or is damaged gets fixed and it's never mentioned again and there's no lasting financial impact, no matter how much they complained about the cost at the time.

Most commonly seen on sitcoms, but it has cropped up elsewhere: when people walk into a house/apartment/whatever, and they don't close the door behind them. Drives me bonkers.
