Re: f!s, tell me your favorite vacation stories!
Where are you going?
Re: f!s, tell me your favorite vacation stories!
did you buy a lot? or anything? that kind of sounds expensive...
a submarine sounds too claustrophobic for me, but windsurfing sounds so cool!
I'm going to Madrid, but only for two days!
Re: f!s, tell me your favorite vacation stories!
We also took the bus to the air force base - it took about an hour - we got to ride through swanky parts and Chinatown - it was really neat.
Madrid sounds exciting, I'm sure you'll see some cool stuff!

There were a lot of opportunities for swimming and snorkelling, which was awesome because the sea life was incredible.
Well, at one of the islands where there were a lot of rocks (and therefore a pretty good surge in the little bay) there were a bunch of sea lion pups playing in the water. As we were swimming around they started trying to play tag with us as if we were also sea lion pups. It was absolutely amazing, and they were much too fast to catch, so they kept looking back like "hey come on what are you doing" like we weren't playing properly.
So much fun. So damn cute.

Other than that, I loved the return trips we would take with my dad from Oklahoma (where my mom lived; we'd visit her in the summer). He had no qualms about stopping at various places that looked interesting (because we had no certain time to get back home). We went to some cool places in Tennessee (Ruby Falls being one) and would stop at big flea markers (I got two T1-84 calculators for $20!).

There were chicken feet in the window, which confused me because that is not traditional Southern food. There were also other southern foods that were fairly common like salted fatback.
We ordered (can't remember what) and mostly kept quiet.
Then they came in. They being a short guy, a taller guy, and the last one we thought was a very tall woman. They looked like whatever your stereotype of a redneck/hillbilly offspring would be. They were loud. Very, very loud. This would not have been a problem until the woman started laughing. I wish I could do the laugh in person for you. Imagine the noise a donkey makes but much deeper (http://youtu.be/gROO7xSTxfY).
That was it for us. We had been on the road for hours and were exhausted. My sisters started laughing so hard they had to go to the bathroom. My dad was just like, "Please get us the bill." We were mostly done with our food by then. So my dad rushed us all out and we drove off into the sunset.

Mind you I'm not American, and I was traveling without my parents as a teenager so that was a bit of an adventure.
I also saw Biosphere 2 on the same trip, which was mighty interesting.
I also visited India a few years back. My timing was impeccable, because I managed to be there during the terror attacks, which I'm sure my dad hasn't forgiven me until this day. But, aside from that, it was pretty amazing. I traveled a lot of Europe before that, but really that just doesn't compare. You're in a completely different culture, different people, different colors, landscapes, smells....
One of the things that truly baffled me most was that I went to landmarks that were also visited by inland tourists, including school buses of kids. And to many of these kids, well, I guess I might have been the only tourist they've come across in the flesh and I had entire classes of school kids wanting to shake my hand and take pics with me. It was surreal. I'm not usually a kid person, but they were so sweet, you just couldn't refuse them.
one of my fav moment of the trip was just when I climbed up a hill to see a temple to Hanuman, and it was just really nice and peaceful of there, and the view was nice - nothing spectacular, just a moment I was truly happy in life.
Also cows everywhere. Cows on the beach, cows in restaurants, cows eating trash from trashcans like cats in the West do.
Re: f!s, tell me your favorite vacation stories!
I got to go to school there for a week, as a visitor. It was really special for me, as I've always had a bit of difficulty making friends, and I seemed to click with a few people instantly (or maybe they were just being polite, lol).
We got to visit Pike's Market, and see the guys tossing fish through the air. He also had and ugly fish on a string, that he pulled when we got close. I got to have a chocolate ice cream called 'Blind Love', that I thing back remember as my favorite flavor of chocolate ever (thought that may just be nostalgia).
I got to see Mount Saint Helena when we were in the plane. Oh! I got to stretch out in empty seats on the plane too! It was years ago and it was really empty. I got to see an oyster with a pearl inside it open. I got to gnaw and taste sugar cane for the first time.
We went to the Rain Forest, which I remember as one of my favorite places ever. It was wicked green, and seemed to be constantly raining. There were trees bigger than the five of us could stretch around with our hands linked, and slugs. My cousin had told my sister that the plastic ponchos my mom had gotten for everyone were called condoms. They were different colors, and my little sister kept shouting "I want to wear the blue condom!"
The whole trip is one of my favorite memories.
