Yeah...not touching that one

anyway today at work. This lady comes in buys something small and pays with a 20. I punch in the number and get as far as counting change back when she decides she wanted to give me a 5 back instead. As I am counting the effing change.

I explain to her that it would be easier and simpler to do it this way. and I get through with it, very stressed and tell her to have a good day. She's like "well it would have been better if I had gotten this much change instead of this much" I apologise and then she's like "Where's my groceries" I give them to her and apologize again and she just walking off seeming all pissed.

Just...can't she see that I'm stressed because I was almost halfway through counting the change as it was, and she wants to change her mind. I gotta make sure my till comes up even too so I can't afford to take chances. I am admittedly not good and calculating in my head. I know that's stupid as a cashier but that's the way it is. I'm just....why decide when your cashier is handing you change that you want to use a different bill and then blame the cashier for it.

and just being impatient with me through the whole time.

and now I'm worried that I'll get pulled in and talked too tomorrow about it because technically only a manager is supposed to be able to deny a customer something.

So just...ugh rude customers. Please realize that your cashier is human too.

Wait, it sounds like she trying to do a short change scam on you and it blew up in her face.

If she did try to pull one, don't worry about being pulled in. She is off trying to play the same scam somewhere else.

Huh...that never occurred to me.

Ahh.. *nod* the place I work is pretty cool about that, if your till comes up short by cents they don't really care. Unless like it comes up $9 short every day or something.

Everybody there is pretty aware that as a new cashier I'm pretty nervous and stuff so I think they will give me wiggle room if I mess up a few times.

I'm confused. If she made a small purchase, which I assume is under 5 dollars, the change is exactly the same minus 15 dollars? unless as mekkio says this was a change raising scam. Though maybe I' not sure what you mean by "wanted a five back instead"

er I misspoke shit.

She decided that she wanted to give me a five instead of a twenty for LESS change

sorry miscommunication.

Counting change is really not that hard. Just give her back $15 less than you otherwise would have.

I suppose...yeah I can work on that now.

It was just the fact that I was getting her coins ready and getting out bills when she decided to change her mind and the whole thing just sent me in a tail spin. She decided she wanted to give me a five instead of the twenty she just gave me and that's a whole different number than what was there. My brain just sorta locks up and I couldn't think. @.@

I was also worried about the till too and how that would come up. I know I shouldn't worry that much but I really need this job you know?

DA

I getcha, anon. Of course it's totally obvious that you just subtract fifteen from the change you were already giving her, but in the moment people are giving you new paper numbers while you're halfway through counting the old paper numbers and now there are paper numbers everywhere and if you count them wrong you mught have the wrong numbers at the end of the day or even *gasp, hushed voice* displease the customer. Arithmetic is easy, but money and pressure make it hard.

I work in retail, and though I'm sure my counter isn't as hectic as a supermarket checkout, if someone asks me to give them different change in the middle of me doing something I say "sure, just give me a second, I'll have to rework out your change" and then take the time I need to take to get it right. If I need to I grab a calculator. If they complain that it's taking too long, I say that since they asked me after the transaction went through the computer I've had to work the change out manually. And if they aren't happy with that, then they should have thought about that before they asked for different change.

Taking an extra 30 seconds to make sure you're giving them the right change isn't a sackable offense, it's doing your job. Don't sweat it.

(Though if you're in that position again, what I'd do is put all the cash back in the register, use a calculator to minus their purchases from $5 then give them that. Easy peasy.)
