Legit that was in the news...I could swear to you I read about it (just a small mention like, "a female staffer in a presidential campaign was forced to leave her position after her Harry Potter fanfiction came to light") before I even knew who Msscribe was. I wish I could remember where I'd read it though. It was definitely an ink-and-paper publication...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)Basically, anything that someone else could blackmail you for could cause you to fail the background check: an affair, being gay, writing porn under a pseudonym -- I'm sure there was a lot more. But the more public you were about whatever they'd dug up, the less likely you were to be blackmailed; I've heard that could make it a non-issue for at least the lower security levels.
