So, our kitten is in heat for the first time. She is an indoor cat, so no change of getting preggo. BUT she can't be spayed until November. What can we do to calm her down and pref make her stop rubbing on things?

This is going to sound completely awful and I understand if you don't want to do it. But...you can get her off from time to time with a q-tip. My cat went into heat twice before we could get her spayed (long story). First time, we suffered through it. Second time, we broke down and used the q-tip. We actually slept that time.

a) You can easily damage your cat's vaginal canal by accident. You can also cause kidney infections and other urinary tract infections. Do not stick things into your cat's genitals, no matter how annoying they act.

b) It's not really the greatest thing for your relationship with your pet if they see you as a sex object. There are a lot of unwanted behaviours that can occur like kneading, humping, urinating in unwanted places, aggression...

I mean, you really should have realized that your cat needed to be fixed by 6 months of age in the first place, and that a cat can still be fixed while they're in heat, but I understand that sometimes life happens and it can be hard to come up with the money to have those procedures done. Still, the solution is not to stick q-tips (or anything) into a cat's vagina.

The reason we couldn't get her fixed when we first brought her in was not because we didn't realize it or because we didn't have the money, and I really don't like the suggestion that that must be why. She had a problem with her liver and we could not spay her until that was taken care of (according to the vet, it could have killed her).

We didn't have any of those problems, but I'm glad you posted the information for the benefit of the anon and others.

It's lucky you didn't, and it's good that it's not going to be a concern in the future.

I'm not really of the mind that you're "raping" the cat, btw, it's just really not something people should try because there's a very very high risk of injuring a cat if you try to do that.

We wanted to get the cat spayed when we got her shots. But she was too small. Veterinarian said she is small for her age on account of being a stray.

Did you stick the q-tip up in there? Just what.

I think it is best not to say now.
