I sympathise anon. I'm lucky in that most of the time I can use multiple beta readers, but there's just one I really love. Her comments on my stuff are super fun (especially on really stupid mistakes), and she comes up with really creative, helpful solutions, whenever I run into plotting problems. I love her. My other betas get the stuff done as well, eventually, when she's not available. But she's just ... the best. She inspires me.

I feel your pain, OP. A good beta is priceless, and they're hard to find. I guess you could try asking more focused questions to your current betas to see if any of them have that potential, like "What do you think of the characterization in this scene, does it fit with what you know of [character name]?" or "This is the point I'm trying to get across: [explanation], do you think I've done that effectively for a reader who doesn't know the backstory?"

Good luck.

A bit tangential, but if a friend of mine started playing WoW all the time, gave up their other interests and stopped checking their email I'd be a bit concerned. They may not admit it, but that kind of screams 'going through a bad patch in life' to me...

WoW ruins two more lives!

Agreed. I lost one of the coolest fandom friends I ever had to the game. When I speak with them now it's like fandom never existed and all of their hobbies are somehow related to WoW.
