I think it's dumb when people look to Disney for progressiveness too. Their business model relies a lot on not offending people.

Exactly. Which is why it took Disney so goddamn long to have a princess who isn't white. They didn't lead the charge on race issues, expecting them to lead the charge on gay representation is really naive.

You mean 1992? Jasmine was the 6th Disney princess, followed by Pocahontas and Mulan before Tiana (none of whom are white).

Tiana was special because she is -black-, as well as her more modern characterization and life goals.

Didn't you know? A character only counts as character of color if the story is set in the US and the character is black.

Thank god Jasmine came when she did because good luck getting an Arabic princess now.

na

I hadn't really thought about that before, but you're probably right...I just can't see that happening now, which is sad

I'd say 55 years between the first princess and the first non-white princess is still a long time.

granted, princess 1 is 1939, princesses 2 and 3 are in the early 50s, and there aren't any additional official princess until 1989, so only 3 princesses for a span of 50 years (and all three are before the civil rights movement and desegregation). the early 90s brings 4 princesses in quick succession: Ariel (89), Belle (91), Jasmine (92), and Pocahontas (94); Esmeralda in 1995 (not an official princess, but portrayed as a character of color), and Mulan (98). and then no more princesses at all until Tiana comes along. and Tiana has been followed by Rapunzel and Merida and Anna.
