Disney is the safest company, I don't understand why people pretend otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This, pretty much. When has Disney ever been about pushing progressive social values? (Princesses that like to read and explore don't count, btw)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there was that time they gave their employees domestic partner benefits before it was the cool thing to do and conservative Christians about had an aneurysm. In their movies, though, not so much.

haha, what was this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_The_Walt_Disney_Company#General_criticism

"The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and the American Family Association voted to boycott Disney over opposition to the Disney offering domestic partnership benefits to gay employees and over opposition to the ABC show Ellen, in which the host, Ellen DeGeneres, came out as a lesbian; Both boycotts were withdrawn in 2005."

This was 1995, which apparently -- contrary to what I was remembering -- put them behind the curve relative to other Hollywood studios. http://articles.latimes.com/1995-10-07/news/mn-54276_1_partner-benefits

Still put them ahead of the curve of every state in the Union and the Federal Government at that time.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
they also cover transgender-related surgery and medical expenses for employees which also made conservative christians have an aneurysm

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. When has Disney ever pushed the envelope, outside of their brief Nazi-worship in the 30s?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Nazi worship? I don't think Disney is progressive either, but they did release an anti-Nazi short back in the day.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
for what ever bizarro reason, people have FREQUENTLY cited that short where Donald has a nightmare about being a nazi as being pro-nazi. basically by people who have never seen the short.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
What the Hell, it ends with Donald waking up and saying how glad he is to be American! And America was at war with Nazi Germany at that time, there's no way in Hell anyone could have made a pro-Nazi cartoon/movie

I think that one is related to the persistent rumors that old Walt was anti-semitic and allegedly would make life hell for anyone that was Jewish and not a vital asset until they quit. The latter he'd supposedly only snub. How much truth is in those rumors I don't know, and if there is any then how much was different from the rest of the middle class WASPs in his era I know not either. There was a lot of lingering anti-semetism in the US until at least the late 70s. Not every anti-semite was a nazi, (and because we need to say it before the flame wars start, not everyone post-80s who is anti-Israeli policy is an anti-semite despite Israel's PR guy's best attempts to conflate the two).

you're an idiot
