Forget waiting for it to be acceptable in the US, Disney has a HUGE market overseas that is arguably more profitable than the US Market. Say what you will about Americans; if you think Russia or China is gonna just love taking their kids to see a movie about a gay Princess, you're deluded.

Excellent point. Some American movies have changed entire scenes just to appeal to Chinese audiences because that's such a big and growing market. They know where the big money is and increasingly it's not in the U.S. Going forward, most films out of the big studios will probably be action flicks and romcoms that can play almost anywhere without anyone making a fuss about controversial content.
