I hate the idea of "tagging your hate."

It's so stupid -- it just segregates positive posts from critical posts.

Like, I get the idea of having a positive tag JUST for positive things. Or a tag specific for hate. But I think a general tag should be viably used for EVERYTHING related to a topic.

I'm with you! - Though there's a difference between saying "This show is so stupid and I hate it, the writing is so bad, etc etc" and saying "Anyone who likes this show is stupid, how can anyone like this, it's so bad, if you like it I think less of you, etc etc". (Ships/characters too.)

Although that's true everywhere for everything.

Yeah, I'm a big believer in letting people hate on or gush about characters or shows or books however much they like (unless they're saying say, racist, or sexist things for example).

It's attacking the fans that I have an issue with.

Like, if you want to go on a rant about Character A, feel free.

If you want to go on a rant about Character A's FANS, though, you can fuck right off (in my ineffective opinion).

Yep! Exactly. You post in a tag how you hate Ship A so much? Go ahead. But when you say Ship A fans are wrong for liking a bad ship that doesn't make sense - go the fuck away.

And then on the other side of the map there's the hypocrites. (RPF example)

Ship A: (on ship tag of the ship they hate) - Can't you see this ship is fake??? They hold hands wrong! Everyone who ships this is delusional they aren't a real couple, she's his beard!!!!! ANYONE WHO SHIPS THIS IS WRONG OMG"

Ship B: (on ship A's ship tag) I can't believe they are saying such things, they are so delusional. Ship B are together, and Ship A are good friends. The proof they used doesn't make sense!

Ship A: GO DIE HOW DARE YOU POST ON OUR TAG, KEEP YOUR SHIT TO YOUR OWN TAG

Yes, but it's also kind of aggravating to see that a ship tag has updated and to have it be "this ship is awful and horrible and everyone who likes it should kill themselves now". I don't have so many problems with "I don't like this ship, it annoys me because (reasons)", but I think that the former shouldn't be tagged with that ship. There's no reason for it other than to inflame.

But that's attacking FANS -- it's not criticism of the ship itself.

What I mean in the original post is: why can't there be a tag called "pro-pairing name" which only includes love. A tag called "anti-pairing name" which only includes hate and/or criticism and then the "pairing name" tag includes either?

Because if you want discuss ships or debate their merits in the current system, good fucking luck.

I feel like that would be a better solution than what we have now -- which is that the general pairing name is ONLY for positive posts while ANYTHING critical (even if it's not insulting or ranting, just criticism) MUST go under "anti-pairing name" or everyone will scream at you to tag your hate.

I post the occasional "Ugh, fuck Captain Swan" when I see it, but I never attack the fans. But I HAVE been attacked when I tag it in the main tag. Cause, how dare I hate the ship, amirite?

I know this is an unpopular opinion on tumblr, but YES. You can't handle criticisms in the general tag - you don't go into the general tag. It's for the entirety of the fandom, not just for fans with a certain specific attitude.

Furthermore, if the general tag is reserved for positive opinions only, it creates an unhealthy circlejerk atmosphere.

Agreed. Mostly because it means babying folk who fail at scrolling. About the only time tagged hate works for me is when I want a quick hit of validation.

I've seen people complaining about getting into arguments when they post negative shit in a tag and I'm like "...what did you expect to happen?" It's that whole "wanting to criticize without being criticized" desire that annoys me. You want to wank on tumblr, go right ahead and talk shit in the general tag, it's your right and privilege. You want to speak into the void with peace, don't tag it where random strangers with too much time on their hands can find it.

I don't mind discussion. But I don't understand why people accuse me of trolling if I write a critical post about a movie or a character and then tag it with the name of that movie or character.

That's what the post is about. Why then shouldn't I use the tag?

I don't have a problem with going through people's responses to my posts (I FREAKING LOVE the back and forth exchange) but when I post something critical of a character's treatment or a movie, it'd be nice to be able to have a discourse rather than being accused of being a hater or a bigot or a troll and told to get the fuck off the tag and stop spreading hate.

I just think that reaction is a bit…much.

But here's the thing -- you should be allowed to criticize something without PERSONALLY being criticized in turn. Saying "I don't like this character or scene or plot line" is just you giving your opinion/analysis of a piece of fiction. I have no problem if someone wants to reply with "I disagree for X,Y, and Z reason."

But I don't at all understand why I should have to put up with people personally attacking me -- calling me a troll or a mindless hater -- when all I'm doing is stating my opinion. I'm not saying my opinion is objective fact or that you have to agree with me. Just that it's how I've interpreted the piece of media.

I do absolutely think that people have the right to criticize a work without expecting to be criticized in turn. Criticizing a PERSON for their opinion is called an ad hominem attack.

That doesn't mean I expect my opinion to go UNCHALLENGED, however. On the contrary, I welcome it. I welcome the chance for someone to change my mind or to offer a new perspective. I've actually fallen in love with some characters that I used to hate by discussing them with knowledgeable and open-minded fans.

Ehhhhh. After dealing with fandom wank and drama in the past, I'd just much rather not see hate in fandom tags, period. I know in concept people should be able to discuss everything in fandom which includes both the negative and positive, but I just think a lot of people on Tumblr aren't mature enough to do that. So yes, while you should be able to tag any posts in fandom tags, sometimes it's best to just leave the more critical/negative posts out of them.

saying "I hate this show, it sucks!!1!" and tagging it with the canon name is just stupid and pointless and will only lead to drama in the fandom. no fucking thanks. everyone's entitled to their own opinions but at least have the common courtesy not to be a stupid asshole in public.

however, saying "I have x, y, z problems with this show/ship/character" without being overly dickish and tagging it is fine and can generate some thoughtful discussion instead of just baiting for wank.
