I think part of it has to do with tumblr again, sadly. I know that when I post fic, tagging it with the fandom will hardly get me any hits at all because they get so much traffic. So you're stuck with character and ship tags (and I don't have a big enough follower base to trust my followers to spread it). So if you can't tag with ships, what are you left with?

I've noticed that I've started writing more shippy fic because of that, because it gets attention and brings readers....

That, and everybody wants cutesy fluffy stuff that has zero to do with the world or characterization.

The last bit depresses me so much, because the world is precisely why I get into fandoms. I don't give a crap about ships, not even my own.

And it's the overabundance of cutesy, fluffy, predictable shippy fic that caused me to drop out of most of my comms. I am SO sick of that.

(This isn't a criticism of you btw; I know what it's like to write stuff that gets no response whatsoever, and it's easy to start slewing one's fanfic in the direction that evokes appreciation. Fannish appetites seem to be getting more and more narrow, though, and it's very discouraging when you hunger for something more creative.)

(yeah, I get that. What I've kind of tried to do is that in between my "real" fics that I work on, I post stupid fluffy drabbles and stuff, in the hopes that they'll catch people's attention and then they'll stay for the serious fics.
I also feel like fics are getting less creative, but idk maybe it's just me and my corner of fandom, or maybe I've just gotten picky. It's definitely a vicious cycle, because the fluffy stuff gets all the positive reinforcement. But as an author... it's easy to get dragged in. You see people squeeing over cutesy AUs enough and then you find yourself wanting to get in on the fun, because that's what the fandom is doing... and next thing you know you're writing fluffy headcanon posts.)
