The only fundamental difference that I can see is that there's more of everything now, which makes sense as fandom has gained more visibility in recent years. This may create the perception that fic has gotten better, but that's probably just because you' have more good fic to choose from now while never really paying attention of bad fic (which has also increased proportionally).
