I don't entirely agree, but I will say that as much as I miss my insanely huge and active fandom, there were some... major downsides. A friendship almost fell apart due to disagreements during RPGs, people on my flist would dictate what I said and how I said it, shipwars were so crazy part of me actually wanted my OTP to not happen because I was sick of the bitching from my friends about how _______ shippers were the bane of fandom's existence... so part of me is okay with things being a little more low key.

Tumblr is good for gifs and I love re-blogging pretty pictures and there are some interesting comment posts, but it's pretty crap for discussion and discussion is why I got into fandom. Can't say I agree about the improved quality of fic either. There are some good writers, but most are still pretty mediocre to bad and there doesn't seem to be as much good long fic that isn't crossovers. At least not in my fandom.

Eh, I'm big into the art part of fandom, and I have to say for all the crap it gets and it's shitty business model, I preferred dA to tumblr. It had more of a community feeling for me. Pretty much everyone's ditched it for tumblr, so I ended up leaving too. I never had issues with the obxinous userbase the place is known for either.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
DA does have a really obnoxious userbase at times but I agree with you mainly because DA has a better messaging system in every way possible. They have private inboxes with messages you can archive, forums, comments with the ability to reply to the comment thread, and best of all they let you control how and what you watch of people and I find the thumbnails a lot easier to scroll through then full posts which means I can follow a lot more people on DA then on tumblr.

Even for visual art organization and the ability to message people properly is really important, in fact I rely upon that for my business.

The only thing I like about tumblr is that reblogging means my art can get around pretty quickly, but otherwise it's not great.

Eh?

This comment feels weird to me. Maybe it's different for other fandoms, but the MLP fandom is hugely concentrated on Deviantart. I feel like it's much easier to find large quantities of good art on Deviantart than on Tumblr.

I agree the quality of fic has gone up.

But, at the same time, I feel the quality of discussion has plummeted. You might find a good bit of meta occasionally, but it seems like modern fandom REALLY discourages back and forth conversation and debate. Sometimes I get the feeling that just challenging someone's opinion is perceived as an attack, which boggles my mind quite honestly.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
There is like zero real back and forth on tumblr, someone states an opinion and someone will often disagree not even thinking that they are talking to a person and then you'll have all these different reblogs of people yelling over each other.

Tumblr has some good thought pieces at times but it also has a lot of misinformation that gets hard to correct once it's been reblogged and terrible arguments that just go nowhere.

That's pretty much where I'm at. I like to ENGAGE with stories, to argue them back and forth, chew them over and take them apart to see how they work. That's not really much of a thing in most fandom spaces these days.

Oh, it's totally true, and it's not just on tumblr. I think a lot of the people who used to inspire said meta have now moved on to professional careers/parenthood/senior citizenhood, and it's been taken over by then-internet newbies used to Facebook culture, where yeah, people basically just talk about how awesome they are, and if someone does more than like your back-patting, it's a good day.

Like you said, you can find good meta, it's just considerably more difficult.

Yeah, easy availability is great. (Thinking about all those tv shows I wouldn't get to see otherwise.) But the quality of fic is pretty much the same in my opinion. There was always great stuff and bad!fic, and it's the same now.

The rest of your list I either don't care about, or find actively annoying. Like gifsets, I hate gifs.

But hey, awesome that you're having fun! :)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think fics are more narrow, though. I feel like it's so hard to find a fic that focuses on the universe, rather than a particular ship. I used to love fics that explored the what ifs, the missing moments, that sort of thing.

I think that if fic quality has gone up, it's just because fandom is bigger and people have grown with it and improved over time.
I don't think tumblr has contributed to it at all - if anything, I think it makes people lazy, because posting cute headcanons that gets tons of notes is so much easier than actually writing a fic, and tumblr posting encourages short little things rather than meaty stories. I once posted a 10k oneshot and people were like "oh my god this is so long!!" and I kind of boggled, because I've posted fics where every chapter is nearly 10k.

I am not annoyed by fandom these days, but I think that there was a certain charm to active communities. The speed at which materials (pictures, fic, art) gets disseminated into the internet has tripled however there is very few bastions of human interaction. I love Fandom Secrets for the fact that I can still technically have fandom social hour. Tumblr is hard to keep track of and I don't consider it a real hub of socialization. I am sure that there are still fandom wars, they are just easily forgotten.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't entirely agree either but i don't miss the drama. but i miss reading about the drama on fandom wank or just in general.

though, i do miss the feeling of community back then.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
All of my fandoms are as dumb and active as ever, but the shift has made it way easier to get the good stuff and ignore the worst. I really like it!

I still like fandom too, but I would be lying if I said there aren't thing I miss about the 'golden days'. It's def easier to find other fans now and quickly see what the fanbase is thinking, but I do feel like it's much harder to hold an actual conversation. With AO3 it can be pretty simple to find fic (which is great!), but I'm not sure if I believe fic is any better now. Lots of bad fic exists, it always has and always will, and while there's some impressive stuff out there too, that isn't new to my fandom experience.

Gifs are good as well, I can't imagine not having gifs, but I'll forever be sad about communities 'going out of style'.

I like fandom as it is now but I do miss discussions and communities, but at the same time I love the pretty gifsets and art and the fact that in a lot of my fandom corners ship-wars seems to be at an all time low(they do happen but I find that it's much easier to avoid them).

Not sure about the fic quality though, it seems about the same but I do much prefer Ao3's search function than ff.net or trawling through random internet sites for fic. It's nice to have most of it in one place.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The only fundamental difference that I can see is that there's more of everything now, which makes sense as fandom has gained more visibility in recent years. This may create the perception that fic has gotten better, but that's probably just because you' have more good fic to choose from now while never really paying attention of bad fic (which has also increased proportionally).

Some things are better and some things are worse.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I don't think fic quality has gone up, it seems about the same to me. I do miss the good 'ol days though. I enjoyed discussing headcanons and meta and such, but it's not so easy to do on Tumblr. But fandom nowadays is definitely good for the more visual stuff, like fanart and gifsets and such.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Totally off topic, but I really like the picture you used. Definitely gets your point across, and the old lady looks so happy!
