I don't think tumblr has contributed to it at all - if anything, I think it makes people lazy, because posting cute headcanons that gets tons of notes is so much easier than actually writing a fic, and tumblr posting encourages short little things rather than meaty stories. I once posted a 10k oneshot and people were like "oh my god this is so long!!" and I kind of boggled, because I've posted fics where every chapter is nearly 10k.

Most people are posting shortfics these days, 500 words if you're lucky. Or "ideas for stories" that never get written, where the author shares a spot of headfic and it stops at that.
