(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)All I've ever heard it used non-mechanically is phrases like "ratchet up the tension" to describe pushing the tension in a scene or a situation higher.
Ratchet certainly is used in that context, but I think you might have missed out on the alternative use that been going around for the past few years: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ratchet (notice that most of the definitions involve the use of calling someone "ghetto" which is code for "black")

People who use it as slang know what the implications are since the very definition is something that is "ghetto" or "trashy" and is usually applied towards women.
