Oh yeah. That's huge. You don't know how many parent-teacher conferences I've had where the parent has admitted they don't know how to help their kids.

I almost feel like there should be a class for the parents.

And I feel bad because really, math is basic, it shouldn't change. Granted when they explain the method, it's what I do sometimes anyway, but I think the student really needs to understand the concept first and I feel like this will only end up with more kids hating math.

At least some of the parents will admit they can't help. I can't even imagine how many WON'T admit it.

Honestly? I find common core helps with the concept understanding a lot more than my math did. When I went through school we all knew the theorems but we had no clue why we were doing them or what they meant. At least with this way they're teaching the why. It also really helps with all those word problems kids used to have so much trouble with.

Then again, half the teachers I know don't even understand common core or how to teach it right so there is a huge problem in administering it currently.

Agh, yeah. :(

I don't really see the example linked above as teaching WHY math works. It just seems like a different -- and in my view more confusing -- way to reach the same answer.

I haven't looked at the link above. I can only tell you the standards I have to teach by and what I have to teach in my class.

Edit 1: Ah! I've looked at it now. That's not what those problems are teaching. Those problems are attempting to get students comfortable with the unknown being in a different spot. Which is helpful for them when they get into algebra and have to solve for x.

Edit 2: However, when we talk about Common Core standards a lot of the math is asking them after they get their answer to explain how, why, and if what they got makes sense.
