"Best" Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2014-10-11 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
For a contrast to the above thread, what are the best fandoms to be in and why?

Re: "Best" Fandoms

Probably some small one that a few cool, well-adjusted, creative people know about and that's it.

If I'm not in a fandom, it's because I'm not interested in the source material or the fandom sucks. All my fandoms are great. :)

As much as I complain about it, there's nothing I love more than cute cuddly technicolor ponies. They're a limiting factor of sorts--even if you're writing about something sad, you can't make it totally hopeless, because they're ponies and hope is a necessary part of their world.

Star Trek.

I imagine old Star Trek had to be pretty awesome--at the very least, it must have been amazingly optimistic about human nature and the future of mankind. I'm not sure what it's like in the wake of the reboot, though. What kinds of things are folks writing?

Revolution has been the best one I've found so far. The fans are so great, we all get along, no wars, just happiness. And everyone's so nice towards everyone else.

I like the MCU fandom. I have never seen any ship wars or people spewing character hate for no reason. Even people fed up with the Loki love are not in your face about it.

And The Walking Dead fandom. Mostly because it is barely there. But what I do see of it is fantastic.

Regarding MCU, I wouldn't say there's no bad parts (there definitely are). I just love how easy they are to avoid. That and that it's such a big fandom that I have SOOO many opportunities for ships and meta. It's great.

Elfquest is a great fandom. The creators are weird, but the fandom is great.

Sleepy Hollow is another fun fandom (we have some fabulous ladies on our show and we know it.) as is Hannibal.

The hands down nicest, politest, just generally good-hearted fandom I've ever seen is for Randy Cunningham 9th Grade Ninja.

Spec Ops: The Line fandom

(What little there is anyway)

It's basically ALL in-depth discussion

God do I love it

But then given the nature of the game, that's not surprising

Well, when I was in it, it had to be the Ace Attorney fandom. It was always nice and welcoming and there wasn't too much ship wank. It could be different now though.

I loved Ace Attorney when the original three games were out. I kind of fell behind though and never got into Apollo Justice. When were you in fandom?

The Babylon 5 fandom seems pretty chill. I haven't seen any drama, and there's a decent amount of quality fic.

Oh like I'm going to advertise I found a sane fandom that is not overrun with trolls or SJWs and can have discussions that do not devolve into unmitigated bitchfests. I don't want anyone from here rocking up and telling people what they are watching is "problematic" or anyone going fedora crazy.

Gotta shout out to Get Backers, Ace Attorney, and Tiger & Bunny. I think it's because the canon is such a mix of "ohhhhh dramatic srs bsns" and "lolwtfever, crack time!" in all of them that the only people who really get into the fandoms and stay involved in the fandoms longterm are the type who don't take themselves or their fandoms particularly seriously anyway, and are unlikely to be offended no matter how different other people's approaches and opinions are.

I mean, Ace Attorney as an example. It's hard to have an angry opinionated debate about a series where a lawyer cross-examines a parrot.

Reboot. One of the creators used to hang out with us on the alt.tv.reboot newsgroup, and everything was all very chill and fun. No wank ever that I remember.

Best fandom I was ever in was the Blackwood/Coward fandom corner when the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie came out. Wonderful people, zero wank, amazing fic, it was incredible. No other fandom since has compared to how amazing that first year after the movie came out was.
