I can see why people ship it - but that being said, I think they're just writing an interesting friendship between two young women and I sort of love them for it.

So much this. I find it amazing that this whole show has been one fuck-up after another relationship-wise, but the second they get to friendship, it's amazing.

Why does an interesting friendship between two young women and a romantic relationship have to be mutually exclusive? lol

It doesn't, but if the show tries to combine them it will fuck it up with a love triangle and/or adolescent idiocy within two episodes.

Because once it becomes romantic, it is by definition not only a friendship?

I think I missed your point. You love them for writing a friendship between two women? The writers could also write a friendship between two women and make it romantic. The reason they won't do that is because it would be a homosexual relationship, not because the writers are placing some "pure" value on a friendship that is only platonic.

They could, yes, but I don't think that's what they're going to do - and nor do you, if I understand correctly.

And yes I understand *why* they're probably not going to go there, and I can see why that is irritating to those who ship it, but that doesn't mean that what they are doing right now isn't also great.

While I understand that lesbian relationships are under-represented in media, so are mature friendships between women, especially between those who have originally been set up as rivals romantically.

I get what you mean, I'm also glad that they're actually developing a mature friendship between two women who were originally set up as romantic rivals. But I don't understand why you're so glad that it's "just" a friendship, as if romance would preclude this. Maybe I just misunderstood you.
You're right, I don't think the writers will make this pairing canon.

I don't necessarily need it be more, personally. And with how they've written romances in the past it just gives them more room to mess up. If they'd do it well, I certainly wouldn't mind, but it's not something I'm waiting for.

To put it this way: I'm happy with the friendship. That doesn't mean I'd be unhappy with a romance, I'm just not waiting for it. I'm just generally happy with the course the show is on now.

Well I'm glad that you're glad that the writers are just keeping their relationship platonic. I don't need it to be more either, but as a bisexual woman I would definitely appreciate it, which is why I expressed annoyance when you said you sort of loved the writers for keeping their friendship platonic.

The best romances are ALSO friendships. You can have both.

Yes, but I don't think it'd actually change the dynamic much on the show. They'd have their friendship but they'd just include some hand-holding and a kiss if we're lucky. So at most what would change is some of the "looks" (which some would argue happen already) and maybe a discussion or two on their relationship. Otherwise I could easily see the writers managing to make the relationship romantic while maintaining their growing friendship at the same time.

Honestly, I'm not sure - but that's mostly because I rather disliked how they wrote relationships in the first season. And come to think of it, even in ATLA I preferred the non-romantic dynamics to the romantic ones. I'm sort of glad Aang and Katara didn't hook up until the very end.

It's not like I'd be upset if they went there, but I'm sort of enjoying what they're doing now.

I disliked how they managed romance before too, but I honestly think the forced subtlety of homosexuality would probably help them in this case. I think the Avatar writers would actually be able to handle showing a good romance if they were forced to show the friendship part of it far more. Korra and Mako were shoved-in-the-face constant-drama omg-passion teenage ridiculousness. Korra and Asami wouldn't be shown like that because parents would freak out over the evil gayness or something. But if they could show SOME of it, it would mean they HAVE to show mostly their good relationship as-is with some subtle changes only. I think it's stupid that they'd HAVE to do that, but the silver lining here would be that them becoming romantic partners and not only friends wouldn't ruin what they have now.

Well, I guess we'll never know unless they actually do it? I feel the show has matured a LOT since the beginning and it hardly feels like a children's show to me anymore, in lot of ways.

Ikr? They have to put 100% of their feelings into only one of the categories of pair-offs (platonic, romantic, catatonic, frenemetic, pathetic, etc.), or my ability to be entertained falls flatt >:U

why are you guys so insistent that there's something wrong with someone wanting a pair to just be friends?

There isn't. But as a queer person it DOES get frustrating to see chemistry between same-sex characters and without fail some one ALWAYS says "UGH WHY CAN'T PEOPLE JUST BE FRIENDS FOR ONCE" - for once? They are ALWAYS JUST FRIENDS. Queerbaiting and subtext and all that crap doesn't count. Of all the myriad of same-sex friendships* available in every media form, would it seriously be SO AWFUL if one developed into something romantic? Just because a lot of fans see queer romance in everything doesn't mean it actually happens. If you want to see just friends, watch/read/etc ALMOST EVERYTHING ELSE.

(*Though I do agree better female friendships are needed in general)

I agree. That whole "I'm glad they're showing they can be loving friends without it having to be romantic!" thing is kind of a annoying thing to say, because there's tons and tons of great same sex friendships in media, while there are almost no same sex relationships. But the way people say it you'd think it was the other way around. Is it so bad for us queer people to hope to see a romantic relationship once in a while? :(

In fact, you usually do. As if a relationship that stops at close friendship is somehow inferior and everyone who REALLY cares for someone must be romantically entangled in some way.

I may be a *little* tired of close friendships always having to turn into romantic attraction in media. Just a little.

I know, all those gay couples out there. Us gay people should just get over it , because we have way more than enough representation, and keep ruining the chance for canon same sex friendships. /sarcasm
