Also, is it really surprising if a straight woman finds the male characters more interesting than the female, regardless of how they're written?

I don't see the need for these justifications anyway. Like who you like. If you're the introspective type then have fun examining why you may have your preferences, but I think there are better things to spend time and energy on than trying to force people who don't habitually do that sort of thing to examine their preferences. The corollary is that I think people who don't want to do that kind of introspection spend way too much time defending themselves. If you don't care then why not just ignore the speculation and leave it to the people who are interested?

I also come from a family in which the men -- my late father, my brothers -- have always been more interested in the female characters than the male, and watched films/TV programs for the female characters.
