"90% of women in media are written by male authors"

I think you're REALLLLLY far off base with your numbers. Or perhaps you meant to say "90%" who were writing the media that YOU consume. Or perhaps this is failed hyperbole. But you are aware there are many female authors?

No matter, 90% of statistics are made up anyway ;)

Vowels don't take an 's' after a plural subject.

So, for instance, it's wrong to say that 'women just don't interests me'. You should say 'women just don't interest me".

I get so confused whenever I read something like this, because a lot of these characters seem fine to me? They're just... people? Idk, it's unsettling to be told that you're just not seeing fatal flaws in things.

This is me on a larger scale. I still like most of my fandoms' female characters, but there's always at least one I have to pretend to like because even just not caring isn't allowed. And having to pretend to like her makes me hate her.

I just wanted to say that I'm so glad that, at least at present, Colbie Summer's Maria Hill is nothing like EMH Maria Hill, because the way she went after the Avengers in it made me facepalm everytime.

If you really can't be interested in or like ninety percent of all female characters, then the problem is definitely with you

I think it's kind of lame you have to pretend you're a super fan of a character. Also, consume more media.

Well, the one thing that 90% has in common without a doubt is... you. So, yeah, there are definitely issues with men writing female characters as they THINK female characters should be, but if you can't find a single redeeming thing about that big a sample... maybe you're the problem here.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Those secrets always feel really weird to me because yes, I'm really all over the female characters that I fangirl about.
Maybe I'm just lucky/good at finding stuff with what I enjoy. Maybe I also easily love characters. Maaaaaybe the fact that I'm into ladies has some influence on a few of my faves... I don't really know.

Anyway, I'd suggest putting your attention to the 10% you really love, eventually asks for recs of media with female characters like them/that have traits or story you'd be interested in ? That could help you find some that you would enjoy !

(Anonymous) 2014-10-15 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, I tend to like and relate more to male characters in things because there are certain character archetypes that I really like/relate to and those usually fall under 'male characters' (though when I find a female character who does, woooooo!)

Are you sure this isn't your problem? I mean, there really isn't one way or another to write men and women since people are vastly different, and people are going to relate to different characters differently. If a lot of women in your fandoms are liking these characters, the problem might not be with how they (or who they) are written (by).

I don't consider not liking every single female character to be an issue, there are female characters I like and ones I don't across all various types of media. And not every character will appeal to everyone anyway.

But not liking a single one at all is just... odd to me. Like I don't get how someone wouldn't be able to find one that they like(I know variety with female characters isn't the best, but it's not like they're all completely the same cardboard cut-out, especially when it comes to TV and books where variety tends to be better).

(Anonymous) 2014-10-15 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is most likely you. You're probably holding them to a higher standard. In fact, your secret pretty much says so.

you say they don't act like how you think women should act, despite you being a woman. So, how should they act? Why don't they act like real women? This reeks of "they don't act like how I think my fellow women should act, therefore, even though we have an increasing majority of female characters who act like people first, it doesn't match up and thus they're written horribly."

And sometimes people just like different stuff. Like what you like. But maybe don't assume that everybody else is liking stuff wrong, or just 'settling' or whatever the problem is that you're seeing here.

In a non-pithy response: I felt this way for a long time. There were only a handful of female characters I liked, and most of them sucked. Whereas there were tons of male characters I liked.

Eventually I realized that there are just more male character in most things, period. Movies have something like 19-33% female casts on average, depending on the genre. I mean, look at The Winter Soldier. Great film, but as far as the male cast goes, you can like or dislike Steve, Bucky, Fury, Pierce, or Falcon. The female cast? If you don't like Natasha you can gfto, apparently, because Maria has a tiny part, and Peggy shows up for less time than the guys who fight Steve in the elevator.

So even though I really only truly liked a tiny percentage of male characters, too, there are just so many more of them, especially in substantial roles, especially that aren't just love interests... The proof of which was going out of my way to watch/read things with more balance and a fuller view of female characters, like the Avatar tv series or hell a lot of fantasy these days (especially the works by female authors) and I find I end up liking characters about equally regardless of gender.

I don't know about the Maria Hill on TV (I just know the comics' one) and I've got to say she's a pretty boring character :/ so I believe your secret doesn't essentially make a point if you're gonna use a plain character as example lol.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-15 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
You have enlightened me OP! I will never again fall into the trap of liking a female character now I know their dirty tricks! I will focus all of my energy on male characters since they're never written badly or are just boring cliches!

Seriously though, I can see why you made this a secret.

I hope you’re being hyperbolic.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-15 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Because I don’t think 90% of women characters are written by male authors. And do you think that just because they are men they can’t write good women characters? Does that mean that women authors can’t write good men characters? I don’t believe that. I think good writers write good characters and okay writers are kind of hit or miss with their characters. I will say that there are still more men characters than women characters and that the audience tends to be more accepting of male archetypes (women characters seem to need to be complex from the start in order to be called good, while that’s not necessarily the same with men characters).

In any case, if men authors is really what you think the problem is, why not watch/read stuff written and/or created by women?

Elizabeth Meriwether (New Girl)
Michelle Ashford (Masters of Sex)
Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls)
Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, The Practice, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder)

Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project)
Ann Biderman (Ray Donovan)
Lena Dunham (Girls)
Janet Tamaro (Rizzoli & Isles)

To be honest, if you can easily dismiss 90% of female characters without looking for redeeming qualities, I think the blame is more on you.

I mean, there are several female (and male) chars I'm not CRAZY about, but that's the thing, you don't have to be, you don't need to be stanning characters (which is bad for other reasons) You have to make an effort to see, with every character, what works for you, what you can get behind.

If a character fails to be compelling to you because It doesn't tick all the boxes you need, you are missing out.

It's not about just sticking to characters no matter how badly wrtten they are or they get, it's about finding the good parts on every character, and appreciate them for it, without having to be their N°1 Fan

Here is your gold star for finding an SJ-approved excuse to hate female characters. Now you can go back to your regularly scheduled fapping over two generically written white dudes looking at each other, while feeling progressive.
