He's a thirty-one year old man who can't say the word sex ("it" when talking to Coulson in 1.13, intimate to Raina in 1.18), the fact that he didn't react at all to Lorelei raping him (although that could be the show's fault since they haven't even acknowledged it), the fact that he got weirdly sexual with Skye and May in the finale (which worried a lot of people), that he supposedly used May for sex (she started the relationship and so I don't buy any of his claims to Raina except for the Coulson comment) and a lot of the things that Garrett himself said. There might also be a few things that I'm forgetting.

Yeah, but it also diminishes Ward's own acts of evil and paints him as a victim instead of willing perpetrator. I am so sick of that trope. The only reason people are trying it is because Ward is a pretty boy.

This reminds me of the Brienne/Pod secret from last week. Historically, when older men are in authority over young teen boys in a situation with no women around, sexual abuse has generally been taken for granted as part of the point. Pretty much all navies, the Spartans and all their creepy imitators, the entire British public school system, the Catholic church...

Often times they'll justify it as a rite of passage, part of toughening the boys up to deal with a dangerous (and presumably very rapey) world. It's different from how they justify sexual abuse of girls, because for some reason people always categorize those differently.

So, yes, I'm inclined to agree with you, OP. I think raping Ward would have seemed like a natural show-of-dominance thing to Garrett. Still doesn't mean I want to see Ward redeemed as a wounded woobie; I'd rather he just left the show, the bland little Nazi.

At the beginning of their relationship (and by "relationship," I mostly mean "association together"), yes. But then he was his SHIELD SO before Ward was on Coulson's team, and Garrett also initiated him in whatever espionage/terrorism HYDRA was doing pre-Winter Soldier.

It wouldn't surprise me. Garrett was an abusive son of a bitch. Think whatever you want about Ward but you can't deny a lot of what happened was because he was an abuse victim for his entire life and it warped him.

Oh dear God, I just finished watching "Turn Turn Turn" (which is the mid-season ep I think?) and at one point Garrett says something like "it's amazing what I could talk this boy into :3" and at the time I giggled because it sounded hilariously sexual to me. Then later I realized it meant Garrett recruited him into HYDRA. Now I'm just horrified because this ties those two together in the most awful way possible. Shit. :X
