I'm with you on feeling let down by the way the book ended but...

...weakest of the kids of the big three? Did you miss that part where he spent the entire book shadow traveling two other people and a big-ass statue halfway across the world? No one else could do that. Or the part where he got all scary and ghostified that (psychopathic) Roman kid?

I thought the book showed he was a lot stronger than anyone realized, simply because he had endured so much over the whole series. I figure that's why Rick had Reyna using her gift with him so someone else could see it.

But all of that did make the wrap-up of his arc all the more disappointing.

And let's not forget the fact that he is by far the youngest of the three (all timey wimey stuff aside).

Good point.

In a lot of ways, he often struck me as one of the more mature characters in the books (after The Battle of the Labyrinth. He had to do some growing up in that one.)

I haven't got there yet but I know what happens - is it really that underwhelming?

depends on what character you're focusing on. reyna was the reigning queen of the book and her parts were the highlights. personally, i think the reyna/nico frendship was the best, most solid friendship riordan has written in the pjo universe, ever.

but everything else wrt to nico (and leo valzez) was a bit of a mess. here's a good SPOILERY meta on that.

i do give kudos for riordan for actually trying with the lgbt representation, although i understand other fans not feeling quite as generous.

I knew i had read his name somewhere in the series and how...minimal...his role was. It almost kind of seems like pair the spares, but i'm not even halfway through.

there was a reply before i coud edit, but i'd also like to add that there was no conceivable way to satisfactorily wrap-up nico's storyline in the very last book of Hoo when, despite the enormous amount o crap swung at him, he's been a side character for most of the series and used and forgotten at riordan's convenience.

too much to deal with, not enough time.

I did love his relationship with Reyna. I would have been perfectly happy for them to go off to conquer the world together (platonically). That would have been way better than what did happen, IMHO.

Ehh, I figured he ended up with a healer because it's a cliche. Light and dark, life and death. They're opposites. And it's nice that he has someone he likes who's worrying about his health and whatnot. Plus they both have insecurities about their fatherly gifts. Honestly, they're kind of perfect for each other.

I hope by "happiness" you mean "a boyfriend."

there's indication of that, too, but i think his main source of happiness and strength was his new found bond with reyna. that was excellent. the most perfectly executed relationship in the book, by a mile.

Sort of. He starts crushing hard on that Apollo kid Will. And Will gets all protective over his health and upset that he didn't come see him, it's adorable.

I honestly felt like Riordan was just... done with the series halfway through the book. The finale was kind of rushed and... not exciting or fulfilling considering the enormous threat building for five whole books.

And then it was 'look at all these relaaaaaaaationships' and it did feel kinda 'pair the spares', but it's felt that way these last handful of books. Relationships! For everyone! They are all tru wub forevars!

So Nico's end was sort of happily frustrating in that it was genuinely wonderful to see him interacting more with people and being more open and hey, maybe having someone who's into him! But it felt kinda tacked-on, too, and so ham-fisted that I didn't think it terribly believable. Especially him going up to Percy. Though that might just be realistic younger teen boy stumbling through 'I had a thing for the idea of you, not the reality of you.'

I dunno. I felt like there was a lot of plot-stupid and short-changing in the book. And apparently I have a lot of thoughts on it, whoops.

All that stuff about Nico having imagined the prejudice against him and killing himself by being in the shadows (...subtle) was awful. Reyna's arc was the only good part of Heroes of Olympus imo, and that all basically happened in one book.

I was extremely underwhelmed with the last book of the original PJatO series, to the point of being pretty irritated by it.

I DID read the first book of the HoO series and enjoyed it, but I've been dragging my feet on the rest and I think a lot of it is because of my disappointment with how the original series ended and the fact that I am afraid of that happening again.

Reading the comments here, I am thinking that fear may be justified?

That's the sad part. The whole series is really great.

And the end just...didn't quite work.
