Oh God why

Dear all European FSers, please don't hate all of us in the UK for what our dickwad PM is currently doing. So many of us are in favour of the EU and don't subscribe to this xenophobic fear mongering.

SA I doubt any of this is even in the news anywhere else, but just in case....

What's going on?

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He's souring the relationship with the EU in a pathetic attempt to win back votes before the ndxt election.

What is he currently doing?? Screwing a goat?

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That would make a nice change! Although not for the goat.

I'm sorry, as far as the EU goes I've spent most of my time thinking about how Ukraine needs to be put on the fast-track to membership.

What's your PM doing? Does he realize that, with at the very least the threat of Russia, unity among the continent is key?

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The details revolve around a payment he is refusing to pay. What it boils down to though is him bowing to pressure and trying to win back the UKIP (right wng nationalists) vote by makng a stand and noise about leaving Europe.

As with everything his party has done he is putting selfinterest before the good of the nation and common sense.

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
As you rightly say, unity is key right now.

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
As an EU citizen I am vehemently opposed to giving Ukraine EU membership until they've made peace with Russia and declared Permanent Neutrality. The latter should be mandatory for all new entrants to the EU and should be being worked towards by all current members. No importing drama, please.

David Camaren is still a donkey's ass, notwithstanding the above.

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Russia invaded Ukraine, seizing territory it had legally signed away during the fall of the Soviet Union. If Ukraine wants peace, Russia certainly doesn't. Blaming the Ukrainians for resisting against invaders is ridiculous.

Ukraine needs the EU mostly because Ukraine needs NATO and the military support it provides. Russia may have been muzzled for the past 25 years, but it is a vicious bear and Putin is a maniac. Allowing Russia to keep just the Crimea has set a disgusting example of what the rest of the world will put up with in "civilized" countries. If Ukraine falls to Russia's power, Russia will make even greater strides for power. The Baltics would probably be back in Russian hands by now if they were not protected by the EU and NATO.

You can't avoid "outside drama". Europe is tiny. You give an inch and Russia will try to swallow you whole.

From Ukraine's perspective this membership is not such a good idea.
EU is in crises anyway. We need ro sort out our economy first.

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-25 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
True, but at this point it might matter more that the EU possesses a lot more artillery then Ukraine alone does.

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
So. Let me get this straight. There is this international treaty agreement that you pay a certain % of GDP, according to a well known formula. David Cameron has spent the last year fiddling the figures like mad to get the GDP figure looking like it is going up before a general election, and is upset that he is now being billed on his publicly declared larger figure rather than the real figure that he's tried to disguise?

Sounds like he is caught in a web of his own lies and machinations. Couldn't happen to a nicer person.

What's he doing now?

I do not watch our news. Can I assume it's something stupid that benefits only the rich people?

"xenophobic fear mongering"
Oh dear. I don't know if I want to hear this...

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-25 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
This time round it benefits only the xenophobes, even the rich of his own party are in uproar (turns out the rich have a good thing going over the EU and don't want to leave either). Still, he (and every Tory since Thatcher) have created a monster that thrives on anti-EU feeling and trotted it out as a dog whistle for votes so often that it has developed a loife of its own and he has lost total control over it.

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
He's increasingly making noise about leaving and has made his crux issue the payment we would have been payinv anyway. In other words he's trying to reclakm the UKIP voters which is ridiculous. Without the EU we are fucked in so many ways.

This sort of thing seems to be a worldwide pattern, at least according to australian, swedish and american friends.

Cameron accused them of racism, now he is acting like this. The no campaign said scotland could not be part of the EU, and now the PM is saying he wants us all to leave. What will he swivel on next???

And we seriously need the EU.

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-25 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
One of the leaders of the No campaign, who spend the last two years saying that Labour was well represented by and in Westminster has just resigned her position saying that Labour in Scotland is not well represented by and in Westminster as her reasoning.

Scotland has been shamelessly, knowingly, lied to during the referendum campaign. Just like the Yes campaign said it was being. Every no voter ought to get on their knees and offer oral sex to the yes campaigners by way of penance for their stupidity.

"The no campaign said scotland could not be part of the EU, and now the PM is saying he wants us all to leave."

OMG, that is priceless. Or tragic. I don't even know. But the political mind is capable of marvelous contortions, anyway.

Sometimes I am just so fucking glad I'm not British. I mean srrly I saw Camerons speech and I can't even. Like one of his spin doctors told him to shout and bash on tables to look decisive and fierce but he kept checking his notes and spoiling the effect.

On the other hand checking why there is a big difference in the payments this year is fair enough though honestly they should know why it is the case already. They provided the figures after all. I think our Prime Ministers response of we will just recalculate and see was a bit more sensible.

Re: Oh God why

(Anonymous) 2014-10-25 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's fair that Cameron wants to recalculate, it is a large of money after all, but all this posturing and raging against the EU in hopes of gaining UKIP voters is making the UK look stupid in the eyes of the other EU countries. Or at least the EU countries that have any money left.

It's so weird what a hard-on UK politicians and the media have for nationalism and patriotism, like they desperately try to pretend they are still the most important empire in the world, when most British people agree that the UK needs the EU and to stop jumping into every war that comes up.
