Man I'm so fucking tired of the idea that characters being happy together, whether in a romantic or a platonic or a familial relationship, is always boring and that it's always more interesting to have internal conflict.

I am so, so tired of that.

So agreed.

What matters is that the story is interesting. And happy people can make interesting stories if done right. Maybe it is harder to write, but that doesn't mean writers should always take the easy way out.

I hate the idea that conflict is incompatible with the characters being happy together. Real couples have problems even when they're happy overall. There are conflicts to be found that don't involve breaking up or big, dramatic fights.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-29 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT - yes, I also agree with this as well, that's a really good point. You can have differences and a dynamic relationship without having characters constantly having knock-down drag-outs.

Well that's true, but I'm also sick of the idea that people fighting all the time means they are in love. Some conflict, friendly bickering, or fights is normal. Fighting all the time is not, especially if the couple has kids.

Yesss. I agree with you. I agree with you so hard.

I wish I had something more substantive to say than that.

Yeah, when I hear a writer say "Happy couples aren't interesting", I think "no, you're a shitty writer, because if you had any talent, you could *make*" them interesting.

So agreed. This is what killed Gilmore Girls for me. ASP's idea that she had to screw with Luke and Lorelai because happy couples were boring. Ugh.

I don't know the show, but man does that sound obnoxious.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-29 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the show OP? Bones? (Idk what the hell is happening on Bones, it's just a guess.)

(Anonymous) 2014-10-29 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly why I quit Bones so you're not alone, OP.

This is why I quit Gossip Girl and How I Met Your Mother. At least for the former, I knew what I'd been getting myself into...

Vampire Diaries?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-29 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Happiness = boring" is the way of the Hollywood world unfortunately. Never ever going to change. Ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-29 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
IA that it's the way of Hollywood now, but uhhh..you know this because...?

Also, "never"? How about three hundred years in the future? Four hundred? The novel had barely been invented four hundred years ago -- who knows how massively fiction is going to change by the 24th century.

It's worth watching the last season! Right from the beginning to the end.

not the best font/background choice

See, with me it's different.

I can appreciate endless UST that spans for seasons.

I can also appreciate happy, somewhat quirky couples.

But the on-off-on-off thing you describe? Now THAT I can't stand.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
That's less 'dropping a show because of a ship' and more 'dropping a show because of shitty writing'. That will-they-won't-they bollocks is no longer interesting or clever. You can stop shoving it in every single show.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Another guess: Glee?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking maybe Grey's Anatomy? I've never watched it so I don't know for sure but I know it's been on a long time and is basically a soap opera so I'd bet there's probably plenty of this kind of thing going on.
