Who has time to follow people this closely? Seriously, you might want to find a new hobby.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Does this really take a lot of time? AO3 and FFnet both allow you to sign up for notifications when someone posts a new fic, and you can clearly see what fandom it's for and how many comments/kudos are in a glance. The whole shebang from receiving notification e-mail to clicking, looking at the new fic and laughing with bitter shadenfreude would take 10 seconds.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
To be able to then compare and contrast to previous fics? Yeah, I don't have time for that crap, even if it's 30 seconds.

I read fic while knitting. Gives me plenty of time to check out what my favorite authors are up to once in awhile.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I only get pleasure if they continue/go back to writing in the fandom I like.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
...okay, why? I don't get the logic here.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
They're hoping the writer will come back or something? Never happens, no matter how lukewarm the reception in the new fandom. There has to be both a pull towards the new and push away from the old before people jump.

I get that you're disappointed, but that just sounds petty...

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I should clarify. I mean when they still have unfinished fics I'm following in the fandom I like, but they're too busy writing for their new fandom. Yes, I'm petty.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
OP again.
That's why I submitted it as a secret. Because I know it's petty.

Then it's more the unfinished fics that annoy you than the fandom jumping. You'd be just as annoyed if they jumped pairings within the fandom, leaving their old pairing fics half written.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
ah, in that case it makes perfect sense. though if someone has multiple unfinished fics you probably could have checked one fandom back and saved yourself the trouble.

Ok.

I've done this, and been accused of doing it. So I'm going to let you into a little secret, OP.

There might be a million reasons why a writer wants to shift fandom. A dying fandom. Crappy people in the old fandom. Lost the passion for it and don't want to write substandard things just for the sake of slapping 'the end' on it. They've found something in the new fandom that distracts them from the shitty RL things they're writing to try and escape from. That they just *gasp!* want to.

You and your entitled demands are NONE of those reasons. Writers owe you nothing.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I can say one thing to that statement. It would be nice if people would finish one fic before moving on to the next. That's not always how ideas flow and some people have lots of things they want to write down, but from your perspective yes, I can see why you feel that way. You're secret was strangely worded though, hence the confusion.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I've been this author (so many times, it feels like), and it's not fun from the writer's end. :( I'm writing characters I love, and I understand there's not always a fandom left for them anymore, but still, I wish someone would love them with me instead of a) looking down on new fans for daring to write, or b) not being involved in the fandom at all because they got bored years ago.

I seem to find things at the wrong times, I guess. Anyway, I've still written for shows where I've received little or no feedback, but it is hard sometimes.

In fact, I once wrote a story that I meant to be an RPF AU in a small fandom. I ended up rewriting it as original story. I do not regret this.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
As a fic writer who has changed fandoms numerous times, people like you don't even bother me. If a fandom, for whatever reason, stops being enjoyable for me or I just stop being inspired by the source material, then why should I keep writing for it? If I'm not still interested in either the fandom or source material, then what I put out will suffer as well and then everyone still loses. It's just not worth it to me if I can't enjoy what I'm putting out, even if at the end of the day I'm the only one who likes it.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
This is me to an extent as well. I've written in over fifty fandoms, though only about ten or twelve in any kind of volume, and I usually drift in and out of my main fandom of the moment within about a year or so. I tend to burn bright and short, basically. I've gone from megafandoms to tiny fandoms, and from tiny to mega, and accounting for the differing sizes of them, my reception has usually been more or less the same (mind you, I'm primarily a writer and don't get involved with a lot of other fandom activities, so I tend to miss a lot of wank). I write while the source inspires me, move off when it stops, and let the readers (and any unfinished stories) fall where they will around that.

Fandom is a hobby to me. I never tried nor ever intend to try getting a job as a writer, despite a couple of suggestions both in fandom and out, because I know for a fact that I couldn't manage it with the commitment and responsibility making a profession out of it would require. So I just write fanfic while the mood is on me, and let the rest sort itself out.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I do feel bad about my old fandoms.

It's never going to stop me moving on, though. It's never worth it.

It just doesn't work like some fanfic readers want. Fanfic writing is a hobby. If readers want guaranteed updates, they should buy books by writers who get paid for it.

It's all too obvious when professional writers lose their interest in certain franchises, but money talks, and readers get more books anyway, if what those readers mostly want is a regular quantity.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, it certainly is petty, but so long as you don't go up to the author and rub it in their face (which, from your comments here, you aren't doing), I don't think it makes you an arsehole.

I kind of understand the feeling, though personally I only feel smug when this happens to an author whose work I dislike.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
The clarification definitely makes this more justified. I'm with you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. You really are an insufferable arse.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wtf is wrong with you?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Stuff like this is why some authors quit writing fanfic altogether. I mean, how dare they want to write (for free, in their own time, on top of day to day responsibilities) the things they enjoy? Shame on them.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even understand what you are trying to say. You like it when an author you personally love doesn't do that well? What?
