[Game of Thrones]

I don't mind spoiling in general. I just don't think it's that funny with GoT; it's far funnier to just wait for crazy shit to happen and watch people react to it.

Ok so

By spoiling do you mean actually being jerks?

Or do you mean openly talking about events that happened in books that came out years ago?

Because if you don't like that I suggest avoiding Harry Potter and the Hunger Games and The Babysitters Club

There was a thong on Reddit where people deliberately sent spoilers in pm's, for example.

Thong tha thong thong thonnnnggg.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think that if there is a space specifically for discussing the TV Show, then book spoilers should not be posted.

On a generic GoT forum, sure. Tread at your own risk.

That's probably mostly because most of the fandom is book readers. Maybe there should be separate discussion places for those who haven't read the books, but you can't really expect book readers to keep book stuff out of the show discussions. I haven't seen very many instances, other than a few trolls, of people deliberately spoiling others out of spite. Mostly what I've seen is show-only people getting annoyed when book readers mention future book events in discussions.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
SomethingAwful changed the name of one of the subforums (FYAD) to something like "Tyrion shoots his father on the toilet killing him"

it was very funny. but doesn't really refute your point about trolls.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just here wondering what is happening in that screenshot.

Contortionist prostitute showing off.

No, really.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
To Tyrion's squire, Podrick Payne, who's looking gobsmacked in the picture but turns out to be a veritable god in the sack.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's Game of Thrones. So something involving sex, rape or torture. Screenshot like this could be any of the above, tbh.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-10-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely agree, OP. There's hordes of jackasses in that fandom that feel elitist for being ~true~ fans and like to be asses to everyone who just joined the fandom because of the series.
philstar22: (Dany dragon)

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-10-31 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I agree these people exist. There is a difference, though, between being an elitist ass who looks down on show-only fans and simply discussing things in the books that came out years ago that haven't shown up on the show yet. You can't expect book readers not to talk about the books. If they are going into posts labeled show-only and doing that, it is a dick move. Otherwise, it is on the show-only people to avoid discussions that involve book people if they don't want to be spoiled.

at least you guys can take revenge soon, what with the show running ahead of the books as of next season.

Not really anything to do with your secret but...

Ick this scene made me realise more than ever I really can't handle looking at people when their body is contorted, especially in that position.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think people who complain about plot details widely-known amongst book fans being ruined for a much-later TV adaptation are the bigger dicks.

When people at work talk about how they can't wait to see what happens next in the show omgomgomg!, I keep wanting to tell them "You do realize this is a book series that's been out a while and you can read it, right?" It's not like it's some hidden, hard-to-find book that you'd be lucky to come across on eBay, either.

There's dozens of films I've watched where I've never read the books they're based on. If I don't get 'spoiled' for the movies, great. If I do, well, I can't really get mad about it. The info's out there, I chose not to find it out myself and ran the risk of getting spoiled and I did. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's neither hidden nor hard to find, but it does differ significantly from the show at several points, and the projected story arc for the next season makes those differences even larger.

And even if it was identical, not everyone has the time and inclination to read a currently-five-book ongoing doorstopper fantasy series penned by a writer who, though not difficult to read, has a knack for making things incredibly sloggy at points.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Jesus fucking Christ, most of the books came out years ago. Nobody complained about LOTR fans talking about how Frodo would destroy the ring and Aragorn would become king before the movie came out. Nobody complains about people talking about how any Anna Karenina adaptation will end with her killing herself. Nobody complains about Les Mis fans talking about Javert's suicide.

But for some reason Game of Thrones fans are a special kind of snowflake who ~can't handle spoilers~ and book fans who don't go out of their way to cater to their needs are dicks now. Either read the books or stop complaining about spoilers.

They very much did with LotR. I was a book fan, and had read the books about two years before the movies were announced, and couldn't understand how someone could get upset with me mentioning something the title itself spoiled (Aragorn becoming king), but I had more than one person get mad at me. It just didn't occur to me that someone would want to watch something like LotR without first reading the books.

I feel bad when people get spoiled, because I totally get the desire, but the movies were always nothing more than a representation of the books, not a thing in and of themselves. So, I have trouble truly getting that someone might not want to take in the original form of a given work.

I really hate the people who complain about knowing the plot, though. I mean, I'll avoid telling someone anything if they ask me too, but don't get mad at me if I mention that the whole point is to destroy the Ring. (How are you even interested if you have no idea what it's about, anyway?)

I've read all the books after season one so I can't be spoiled anymore, but yes some book fans in this fandom have a particularly obnoxious way of lording their knowledge or constantly "hinting" at the "crazy shit" that's about to happen, like "ohOHOHOho you'll see you'll see" *mustache twirl* and it's weird.

I understand getting excited about things to come or whatever, and I also understand that these books have been out for a long time, but it's still strange how tempting that seems to be. When I talk to show fans I only talk about events that have been on the show.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
This pointless fucking scene. 80% of the show is pointless fucking scenes usually spent on awkward sex and nudity. This is the worst show ever.

There seems to be this attitude that if you haven't read the books you are an illiterate moron who must be punished for not appreciating a work of genius. I eventually just gave up and just spoiled myself for the entire story so far. God knows how people managed to film those Red Wedding reactions as book fandom had been going on about it every time GoT was mentioned for the previous three years.
