I can understand that style of stress, where another actual person is involved and it involves something you're creating. I usually only employ "it's only fandom" in the really extreme cases, like when people are having emotional breakdowns over wank and such.

...And now, typing that out, I realize how condescending it sounds even in that context, because it's probably not the fandom itself, but some underlying issue that needs to be addressed. :/ I thiiiink I'm going to go ahead and never say that again.

Wank's upsetting because fandom is only the starting point -- maybe you like a particular character, or pairing, or you didn't find a particular episode 'problematic'... And, suddenly, it's escalated and it's all about RL issues, and you find yourself on the 'wrong side' of the debate, being made to feel like an irredeemably bad person, when you actually agree with 99% of what the wankers are saying, but they won't listen to you because you like that character, or pairing, or didn't think that episode was 'problematic'.

Sometimes, fandom's like bloody Salem.
