I followed the Layton series for awhile, but my interest dried up when this game came out. Precognition?

I'm gonna admit to liking the first three a lot more than the prequel-trio-erm-thing. Maybe it was me being naive back then, but I genuinely liked the absurd twists of the original games.

Azran Legacy was okay, even though I guess it was forced to tie up a lot of ends because it's a finale to a prequel series.

Yeah this felt like the weak link in the series to me. The Azran Legacy was better this just had no real consequences and a strangely easy resolution.

"horribly grating character" who was being played like a fiddle by Descole, after falling to (what people thought to be) his death and then having amnesia for eighteen years, you seem to have conveniently left out. Was Randall being an ass? Sure. But there was a lot of truth mixed in with Descole's lies, so it didn't help the situation either. Henry was, on the surface, married to Angela, and he did amass great wealth after creating the city of Monte d'Or. The house of Ascot did fall into ruin, and Henry was managing everything that was meant to be Randall's. All Descole had to do was mention all of that with an extra detail: Henry had stolen everything from him.

Randall was forgiven because the theme of the story was loyalty and friendship. He was forgiven because at one point, he had shown Henry great kindness and treated him like a brother. I'm not saying that just because Randall "paid in" to their friendship when they were kids, that he is entitled to a clean slate, but for Henry, the act of kindness was enough. Besides, once Randall realized how wrong he was, it's not like he kept at the revenge thing.

But now that you mention it, it is mentioned somewhere that Henry did have some feelings for Angela. I'll buy that Henry never crossed that line, but I could just imagine the sexual tension throughout the years.

On a side note, I really liked the 'Masked Gentleman' role, it was like one cohesive 'fuck you' to all of Randall's friends.

And on a flat-out tangent, I admit I am little biased here, as Miracle Mask is one of my favorite games in the series, possibly my favorite. Not just for the overall story, but for the fact it was another window into Layton's younger years, showing what really drove him to pursue archaeology.

I personally dug Miracle's Mask and it's my favorite Layton game behind Unwound Future (which has the saddest damn ending ever and I love it to pieces.)

I think Randall had enough of a justification to act the way he did and a lot of manipulation from Descole that caused a severe amount of misunderstanding and resentment for him. Henry forgiving him just like that might have been an easy solution in the end, but that's kind of the point; that long lasting friendship and loyalty due to acts of kindness in the past will go a long way.

Yeah, if you think about it, Henry's plans to help Randall is stupid ridiculous, borderline convoluted, and waaaaay too thought out, but I admit I almost choked up when I saw that flashback between Randall and Henry. Course, I think I'm being biased, Nintendo games have an emotional effect on me with their tales than just about any other games.
