I'm glad because then maybe the obnoxious fandom will finally piss off for good

Dude, if the first three seasons didn't scare them off, then nothing will short of Benedict Cumberbatch leaving the show.

i'm surprised to hear he's even signed for a new season. his profile in the movie industry is rising very fast to the point where he's been shortlisted for an oscar nom.

i don't see the sherlock gig as anything like mcconaughey and true detective at all, before anyone brings that up.

I mean, we don't really know how long it takes him to shoot it, and that's really the important question

Plenty of people reach that height only to flop and never be heard from again. Meanwhile, Sherlock's only been going for three short seasons, and leaving a hot TV career for the allure of the movies is a notoriously risky move. *coughcough*thatguyfromDowntonAbbey*coughcough*

this probably proves your point, but which guy from Downton Abbey are you referring to? I'm drawing a complete blank

Dan Stevens, the guy who played Matthew Crawley. He insisted on leaving the show after series 3, refused to hang on long enough so the writers could gracefully find his character and exit and (SPOILER ALERT) his character ended up dying really abruptly in a car crash. It was almost hilarious.

dan stevens is a terrible example of someone "reaching that height only to flop". dan stevens hand't built the amount of good will, nor had gathered the acclaim, nor managed to land and be courted for the sort of roles cumberbatch has when he left DA.

it's funny, because i think less of cumberbatch's talents as an actor than what seems to be the consensus among critics (i think he's limited in range and posh brit dude will always be his bread and butter - but hey, colin firth built a career on that). but i still think he's pretty much safe at least for the next half decade wrt to getting film gigs. especially if he lands the oscar nom for the imitation game.

there's nothing else sherlock can do for his career, but his loyalty to the tv project that put his face out there gets a tip of the hat from me.

Okay, how about David Caruso? David Duchovny? Shelley Long?

still no. seriously, benedict cumberbatch was on the film awarded an oscar for best picture just last year (eta: this year, even, we're not in 2015 yet, just very close). and his performance was among the most praised, only reason he wasn't nominated was because, well. fassbender.

i'm not even a fan of this dude and it's crystal clear to me ditching sherlock, when he does, will not be a horrible misstep at this point.

None of those actors had built successful careers outside of their shows at the times when they left. Cumberbatch already has a successful film career. That's the difference.
