Attachment to Everyday Functional Objects
I'm excluding extremely interactive objects (computers/phones, gaming devices, cars/bikes), and objects imbued with sentimental value (gifts from loved ones, childhood toys). I just mean functional items like a reading pillow, a lamp, or a favorite coffee mug.
For me, I take medication that gives me dry mouth, so I keep a water bottle upstairs in my room all the time. A few years ago, I went to a con in Denver and they gave out these big water bottles for hydration at elevation. It was a large size (32+ oz), easy to clean, great for using at my desk or keeping by my bed at night. Because I was there with my parents, we had 3 of these bottles. Unfortunately, because they are squeeze bottles, they tend to split along the seam in the plastic with repeated use.
Bottle #3 is on its last legs now, and I've just had to do a lot of comparison shopping to find a good replacement for it. I've ordered one that looks good and long-lasting, but I'm also really attached to the Denver bottles and worried I won't like the new Nathan bottle as much as these ones. This is a normal reaction to something you use everyday, right?

I have a lot of feelings about my car, too. Rightfully I should have gotten a new one, but I'm drawing it out as long as I can.

I'm guilty too of course, because I broke her mug with the whales on it. But it's got pencils/pens in it now.

Re: Attachment to Everyday Functional Objects
I do it with clothes pretty often. I also do it to my guitar, which I barely play because I don't want to go through the bleeding-fingertips stage again, but I also don't want to get rid of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 02:09 am (UTC)(link)Unfortunately I'm also really rough with them so have to replace them relatively regularly and it's always awful.

Or do you mean like object sexuality?
Re: Attachment to Everyday Functional Objects
No no, I think my thing is definitely just "used to using this all the time, hard to find a suitable replacement that meets all the qualities I like." The plus side is, if I like the Nathan bottle as much as these ones, it's much easier to replace! Unless they discontinue it or something of course. But I think it's pretty popular, so let's hope!

But it's one thing to complain how you can't find a replacement for that great baking dish in an odd size, and another to keep the old one once's it's completely worn out.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 04:46 am (UTC)(link)Computer keyboards and mice, handbags...TMI maybe, but I have been ordering the same styles of undies and bras for something like 20 years. Also a tiny clasp coin purse I carried for ages until it wore through; had to scour Etsy to find one that was just the right size, shape and style in a similar fabric (I had to get a different color, but luckily I found one I really liked.) And I just ordered an updated version of my old netbook that's essentially the same beast but with better specs.
