I dunno, I think when it comes to why this ship won't happen, it's probably more due to Breakdown being dead than anything else. :p

Just because he's dead doesn't mean it can't be canon. Knock Out isn't, after all. I'd be happy with posthumous canonization.

If we're talking posthumous shipping, I'm more of Breakdown/Airachnid myself. But only if Airachnid isn't a vampire zombie robot queen.

Dead and hollowed out for Silas to use as his Decepti-suit. Like if a robot skinned a human and wore their hide.

TF:P could be surprisingly dark. This was a show that had Optimus "Robot Jesus" Prime threaten to torture a prisoner, you know. I like to pretend that episode was like the Star Trek:Enterprise Mirror episodes, and took place in the Shattered Glass verse. It also had Arcee try to pull the old "shot while attempting escape" trick on Starscream when he wanted to defect.

You're not kidding! I never would have been allowed to watch TFP as a child, if my parents had known what kind of stuff it'd be throwing out there.

Poor Breakdown getting broken down (lolz) and then some throughout the series was one of my favorite themes/subplots.

TFP had a really weird case of protagonist-centered morality. I don't think anything the Autobots did was ever really treated as morally wrong, and some of it really was. Like the bomb in Laserbeak, or the threat to dissect Soundwave. I mean, the Decepticons weren't shining stars of morality either, but at least they were treated as being wrong.

I'll give them a pass on Lazerbomb, because Lazerbeak's sapience was dubious at best in that continuity, but the rest of it. Yeah, they kinda sucked. All the Autobots committed straight up warcrimes and were never really called on it at all. At least Starscream and Knockout got called on their shit, and treated like buttmonkeys because of it. With Megs, Soundwave, and Shockwave being flat out evil. The Vehicons and and Breakdown were just boring mooks.

Definitely agree with you there. They set themselves up for some really good plots, but for a show as 'mature' and dark as this one was, they very much had rose-tinted glasses on when it came to what the protagonists did.

I saw it as bots in a war doing the awful things war demands of them to gain advantage, and that even the Autobots could make unsound/unsavoury decisions despite their technical moral high ground as the protagonists. Not that the show fully explored that, especially given Arcee's tendency to relearn revenge isn't a right option. I'll give it points for having things like that create repercussions for the heroes (allowing Starscream to escape for instance).

For me, it seemed like the show kept forgetting it was a kids' show (olderish, whatever), but never quite the other way either.

I think they were pretty confused as to what they wanted their target demographic to be >>

Definitely. Though I found TFP enjoyable, and easy to get into for someone like me with little to no background in TF lore, I really wished it had some consistency. Don't know if it would have necessarily improved the feel since it would still be full of dropped potential, and that rushed ending would still be a rushed ending.

Agreed. I mean I kinda get why, it's a kid's show so there's a kind of mandatory requirement that Autobots = Good while Decepticons = Bad. But TFP was also trying to establish a gray moral center with their cast to show the bleakness of war, but it often ends up much clumsier than what they likely intended. This is why I appreciate some of the latter episodes where Ratchet constantly questions some of his teammate's actions.

Doctor Who S8 Spoilers

Now I'm being reminded of the B plot from the S8 premire of Doctor Who.
