While I still take issue with how Slytherin was protrayed in such broad strokes ... Harry is so the exact opposite of priveledged.

This is especially dumb if we're talking about the Gryffindor vs Slytherin thing here, because Draco Malfoy is pretty much the definition of priveledged. Heck, he even gets a bit of the "jock" mentality when he becomes Slytherin's Seeker, though ultimately I wouldn't consider him popular beyond his own house.

Actually, the only "popular" student character I can think of in the books would probably be Cedric Diggory. Apparently popularity is the kiss of death.

I think part of the problem is that the books were almost entirely from Harry's POV. We saw individuals, and then we saw "XYZ from This House". I spent ages constantly forgetting that Luna was a Ravenclaw, and she's the only real friend of Harry's outside of Gryffindor I remember. On the other hand, he was relatively neutral to people from other Houses he didn't know or interact with much, and it just so happened that he didn't know or interact much with Slyntherins who weren't his "enemies".

The movies, however, were terrible about this. They had some great House-mixing in the background, but in the foreground they were much more "broad strokes" types that unnecessarily portrayed all Slytherins as evil. :|

Yes, Harry's POV definitely did shape things. But given the amount of time Gryffindor spends with Slytherin, there were plenty of opportunities to show at least one of them in a positive light. And IIRC, the entire Slytherin house leaves instead of fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts. So while the POV choice doesn't help, it also didn't completely justify things.

Yeah, Rowling really could've done a better job with the Slytherin house. Slytherins can supposedly be good people, but we only see them being huge tools who never contribute positively to anything. The most "heroic" Slytherin we ever saw was Snape of all people and he's still...well, Snape. I kind of hope that we at least get some supplementary material from her that showcases the positive aspects of Slytherins

If it's any help, apparently Merlin was a Slytherin.

Draco didn't even seem actually popular in his OWN house. It felt very much that people liked him for his money and otherwise feared his father.

Yeah, there's definitely some of that. Or people being "friends" with him because he comes from a prestigious Wizarding family. I think HBP makes it pretty clear that he feels isolated, when the only person Draco has to talk to is Moaning Myrtle.

Of course, being "popular" doesn't always mean having genuine friends.
