Favorite ways of coping with cold weather

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
There are two coffee places in my hometown that have fireplaces. Best thing ever.

(Now, if only the place that makes the amazing hot chocolate that's so thick it's almost like chocolate pudding would install one...)

This is the season when I want oatmeal for breakfast and soup for lunch every day, wear thick wool socks, and encourage my cat to sleep under the blankets with me.

What do you do to drive the cold winter away, F!S?

Tea, tea, tea.

Also I wear fingerless gloves for about 4-5 months or the year.

But yeah, tea. I bought myself a bunch of varieties of leaf tea, and just make a can of it.

Aww, anon, I'm jealous x_x In a good way, though. I'm glad your hometown has these awesome things.

I do follow a similar strategy. Huddling under thick blankets and duvets, drinking even more tea than usual (and putting even more honey and berries into it), drinking hot milk with honey, eating lots of things rich in chocolate (pies, brownies, chocolate logs 9_9), reading huge books, watching colourful films. I'd use my cat, too, but unfortunately she's about 1,563 miles away from me.

I like doing monotonous but pleasant work. RN I'm in the process of digitalizing a book that's in public domain but has never been released in an electronic form.

Huge books, yes! What is it about them that's so wintry? This is going probably to be one of those years where I try to finally read all the way through Kristin Lavransdatter or Moby Dick...preferably in front of one of the said fireplaces.

Good luck! :) I must try Moby Dick, too. I've never actually given it a go, astonishingly. It does sound like a perfect winter book.

I had an electric blanket start a fire while I was sleeping. Fun times.

Ew. I have one that has automatic shutoff, and I keep it on the low settings (1-4 out of 10), and I've never had a problem so far.

Ew million times.
I'm sure you'd have found out about any problems already. It's either breaks during the first few uses or it doesn't and works alright.)

Lots of tea and hot chocolate. Homemade soup. And baked goods!

What kind of soup? I once made oxtail, back when I was more ambitious. And five-bean stew (in the oven). And I used to make corn bread regularly--chili and cornbread. I've got to get my oven fixed.

Whatever appeals to me at the moment: chicken and pasta, french onion, creamy potato and leek soup... Chili is a great idea, too. If you don't mind the slight difference in shape, you can also use cornbread mix to make griddle cakes on the stovetop, much like you would for pancakes. They're good. :)

At work I finally have a cubicle friendly heater. Well, I sort of borrowed it from a coworker, he let me when it was really cold at work last month. But I offered to give it back and he said na. Must have felt sorry since I always wear a fleece jacket and scarf at work. Even during the summer...

Heinz cream of tomato soup for lunch. Although these days I have to add salt to it to get it taste right, damn lo-sodium health legislation. Ever since it came in, I think my salt intake has risen because I have to add it to everything and rarely did that before.

The important thing is: do you eat it with a grilled cheese sandwich? That is the correct way to eat tomato soup.

I'll think with sadistic glee that my sister's arsehole of a boyfriend, coming from 2000 km south of here, not accustomed to the cold and hating it, is having it way way worse than me.
If things go even worse, I'll hope that it'll make him fretful, and nostalgic of his hometown, and likely to get bitter at my sister and his whole situation and maybe, maybe, reconsider his life choices. The hope that they'll break up some day and we'll get rid of him warms me up.
