Fandom stereotypes

What do you fit, or not fit?

Go into specific fandoms if you like

I'm a huge Spec Ops: The Line fan but I'm a female in my early twenties so I guess that's unusual? Maybe it's not, but it seems like the overwhelming majority of fans for such games are male. I unfortunately missed a lot of the discussion about the game since I got into it so late so I'm not 100% sure there.

I don't know if I fit the femslasher stereotypes or not. I'm a bit desperate for viable femslash ships and they get most of my focus but I also have het and slash ships I like.

Well, it would help if I knew what the stereotypes are...

I like mostly slash ships, although there are het ships I prefer in certain fandoms and I've read/enjoyed femslash.

Uh, Teen Wolf is my main fandom but I don't know that I'm in the target demographic.

I always wonder with Teen Wolf - the vast majority of fans I ran into seem to not be the target demographic.

I always thought target demos was a stupid concept anyway. Who care how old someone is if they're contributing to ratings, right?

I feel the same - though it really stand out with teen wolf for me.

It makes advertising easier to sell. Certain products are really going to appeal more to teenage boys than they are to senior women, and vice versa. (Not all products, of course, I'm thinking things like wheelchairs or Axe here.) Having a target demographic makes it easier to convince advertisers of products aimed at teenage boys or senior women that people of that demographic watch the show. While it would be nice if shows didn't need to sell advertising, unfortunately that is not true.

TBH I don't think I've ever known a Teen Wolf fan who was a teen...

(Granted, most of the Teen Wolf fans I know are f!s regulars, and I could be wrong about their ages, but...yea. Plenty of non-teens watch TW.)

True for here. I think a large percentage of the fic writers and Tumblr fans are teens. At least they come across that way!

Haha, IDK man, IDK. Some of the best fic I've read in recent years has been TW fic, so I try not to assume! (People DO get really crazy about TW on tumblr though...)

Iirc, f!s generally ranges from early 20's to mid 30's. When was the last time we had an age survey thread... But I also think that the folk who come here aren't necessarily a good gauge to get a handle on a fandom, or community, they're accidentally repping. We tend to skew too cool ♥

Re: Fandom stereotypes

Haha, yea, I think you're right about that. F!S is certainly not an extremely accurate representative for all fandom, just a small sample size. Early 20's to mid 30's sounds about right from what I can remember as well, but I'm fairly certain we have middle aged members too, just maybe not quite as many.

For some reason I tend to think most TW fans are in their 20's, but maybe F!S is the cause of that so my perception is probably askew... Now I'm really want to see the numbers.

I'm a canon shipper. But really, it's not that I don't respect people who ship differently - I just can never get past "but he's married to X" or "but they hate each other!" in pairings, you know? Nothing personal, I promise. (I also admit that the term canon shipper is flawed...)

Nerd. Academic. Non-heteronormative.

That's about it though.

I'm a straight, heteronormative shipper. I'm why they throw romance into action films. I'm the target audience for, say, why Ares had a 'thing' for Xena rather than the subtext between Xena and Gabrielle. If there's a female in the equation, like Buffy, I won't see anything slashy between Angel and Spike. For me, there's no subtext between two men clashing over a woman.

Sometimes, I feel like The Enemy in fandom.

I'm a chubby gay agoraphobic shut-in, which I think makes me fairly stereotypical.

Oh wow, another shut-in on fs. I'm the same for the most part except swap out gay for asexual. And change agoraphobic to germaphobic.

- I only ship canon ships and that makes me boring.
- I'm also a fan of many tv-shows where I have favorites but I don't care about the ships.
- I need to like both characters equally to like a ship, if I like only one of them while I'm indifferent or dislike the other, I won't ship it
