I don't mind it so much. "Think beautiful adn you'll BE beautiful"? Well, not ideal, but considering the 60s context still a more positive message than "Look exactly like this or no one will want you." Certainly Magda's "poncho dress" is ridiculous, and the idea that the three miners would be able to hold the starship hostage is ... yeah. But I always thought that Evie's final scenes with Childress (?) were actually well done.

(For me, the only ep I always skip is Space hippies. And The Apple. They aren't bad enough to be enjoyable, like Spock's Brain, they're just ... unwatchable.)

I forgot about The Apple. Oh, wow, The Apple.

Wait, weren't Space Hippies and The Apple the same ep? Or am I just misreading and that's what you mean?

I always think so too, because the leader of the hippies eats an apple or something once the group reaches "Eden," but I think the Space Hippies is actually called "The Way to Eden."

"The Apple" is where Kirk teaches some innocent "primitives" who are all Adam-and-Evelike how to anger their god and have sex :p

I had completely forgotten about The Apple. In fact, I still can't remember anything about it. Now I'm going to have to track it down to find out what I think of it! (Actually, nevermind that. If someone else who likes TOS, thinks the Space Hippies are unwatchable and enjoys Spock's Brain for how bad it is, thinks that The Apple is a waste of time, I'll skip it. Chances are my opinion will be close enough to not matter.)

I never bother to remember what the Space Hippies episode is called. Everyone who knows anything about TOS knows what you mean if you say Space Hippies. :-P

I don't know, Chekov's pretty cute in it and the 'sex talk' is... 'you'll figure it out' so it might be ok if you keep a Spock's Eyebrow ready for it.

Definitely! I just happen to know what it's called because I always wind up calling it "The Apple" (for reasons I noted above). At least Space Hippies has things to laugh at; The apple, otoh, to me is just ... my memory is that not only is the ep entirely humorless, to me personally it's always been borderline offensive (mostly because of the bronzing gel that always makes me think of blackface) on top of the the "orange people (aka PoC) are naive and primitive" presentation with a bit of Noble Savage tossed in). Obviously no one is likely to do an ep like this today unless they were going for satire (I'm sure Key & Peele could do something scathing and hilarious with it.)

(Of course, I also know that, in the cultural context of the time, the notion that Adam and Eve weren't white was actually a bit radical for the general population, but that doesn't stop the episide from making me cringe.)

tl;dr I always skip this one.

ETA: IMO you should watch every ep of TOS least once; your takeaway is likely to be entirely different than mine.
