Even over Spock's Brain and the Hippie episode?

This was my first thought. Or space nazis.

I am one of the few who liked Spock's Brain. For the mere fact that it feeds my TOS!Era Spock/Kirk feels. Kirk only cared about Spock that ENTIRE episode.

I HATE Nu!Kirk/Spock, but TOS? I'm all for it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I was a Trekkie for years before I saw any TOS, and I was bracing myself for a lot of boring/embarrassing stuff. But most of it was SO good. I disagree with your specific choice here, I think there was one where they spent the last 10 minutes talking up the US constitution or something. But I do agree that a lot of the supposedly stupid ones aren't that bad. Or at least have their positives.

The Omega Glory. Where the aliens were literally American (Yangs) and Communist Chinese (Kohms), and the Constitution was a holy document for the Yangs.

Oh, I definitely think there are some that are more ridiculous. I had trouble with The Enemy Within. That fucking unicorn mop dog. Also: "IIIIII'M CAPTAIN KIRK!"

I actually love The Enemy Within. The unicorn dog was amazing, and I loved timid nerd Kirk. It was still a silly ep, but it's by far not one of the worst.

I love that dog. Steals every scene.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I find quite a few of the episodes to be really silly, but yes, this one was pretty stupid.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that this had a nice point though - that they never needed the beautifying drug to begin with.

60's television was so campy.

But I love this episode...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, it completely smashes the idea that Kirk is some horn dog idiot. Out of everyone on the ship, if I recall correctly, he is the LEAST affected by the women. And I really loved what he said at the end -- about how, man or woman, it's confidence that matters so much. We have to believe in ourselves first.

Is there sexism? Yeah, but I think there's some good points to this episode too.

Re: But I love this episode...

+1 especially given the time in which it was made, at which point life on present day Earth was still aeons away from anything recognizable as an egalitarian society.

Re: But I love this episode...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
All very good points. If it's watched in the context of its time, it's not that insipid (as with a lot of other TOS episodes). And yes, a perfect example of how Kirk wasn't a horn-dog womanizer cough JJ Abrams

Re: But I love this episode...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that if you examine the episodes where Kirk DOES sleep with someone, or nearly does, it's either what we'd consider rape or extenuating circumstances. There was the lady who had like, date-rape tears, he was amnesiac with Mirimanee (spelling?), that one lady who threatened to blow up the Enterprise and kill all the crew if he didn't sleep with her...

In one episode, doesn't he state that captaining the Enterprise takes up all his time and he has none for romance?

I love Kirk. He is/was so awesome.

I don't mind it so much. "Think beautiful adn you'll BE beautiful"? Well, not ideal, but considering the 60s context still a more positive message than "Look exactly like this or no one will want you." Certainly Magda's "poncho dress" is ridiculous, and the idea that the three miners would be able to hold the starship hostage is ... yeah. But I always thought that Evie's final scenes with Childress (?) were actually well done.

(For me, the only ep I always skip is Space hippies. And The Apple. They aren't bad enough to be enjoyable, like Spock's Brain, they're just ... unwatchable.)

It's Harry Mudd, OP!! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE RIDICULOUS.

"I, Mudd" gave him the best comeuppance though. "Haaaarcourt Fenton Mudd...!"

I actually cannot think of a single Star Trek episode I found completely atrocious. Even the ridiculous or wince-worthy ham-handed episodes usually could be seen in a good light if you squinted a bit, and most of the really shitty ones were great fun.

This episode pretty much makes me "lol confidence gives you perfect makeup and hairstyling! Oh, you were trying to say that it's inner beauty and confidence that makes a person attractive. Oh, well, that's good, so, um..."

Huh. I loved this ep. I loved that that miner fell in love with her, in the end, *without* the trick of the pills, and that she was, at heart, a practical woman who figured out, for instance, that hanging the pans outside in the sand-blast wind would clean them. Plus, Harry Mudd! Always fun.
