lololol is Europe a single entity now?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not yet, but it gets closer every year. The dream of a true United Earth, as seen in so many US tv sci-fi franchises, is one that is coming closer all the time from within Europe. Mainly because continental Europe isn't so fixated on refighting WW2 over every damn thing, in fact exactly the opposite.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Is that what they're telling you in school? On the news?

And they say the US is full of lies and propaganda.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It certainly is, if you disbelieve that. The EU nations may have their difficulties and arguments from time-to-time, but apart from England (which has always been the US's puppet-state) closer ties are constantly being forged and national boundaries are becoming increasingly irrelevant.

this is not true. international relations are important but there is a very strict line drawn between international law and state law, for instance, and any breach in the latter is justifiably treated with contempt. states work together because it's for their benefit and for the benefit of the world/europe as a whole, not because they want to lose their stately autonomy - quite the opposite is true, actually

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ehhhhh I would actually push back on this a little.

On a theoretical level, it's true to an extent, but it has to be recognized that the whole concept of the world being organized into a group of discrete, sovereign, distinct nation-states is to some extent a theoretical creation. It's not necessarily the only way in which the world could be organized, and treating that specific system of organization as an iron-clad law of nature is probably not justified. And we've seen, in the past, concepts of political organization that don't really match with our concept of a state. So in other words, the idea that the international sphere is composed of distinct, sovereign, self-interested states is, while an accurate descriptor of the world right now, itself a result of the ways in which we see and organize the world.

From a practical point of view, I think it has to be said that Europe does seem to have some interest in letting go some degree of stately autonomy and granting some degree of authority to a central European body. And obviously, yes, the motivation of these states is partly self-interest, but I don't think you can ascribe it entirely to self-interest (especially given how squishy the concept of self-interest gets at a certain point). I think AYRT is both exaggerating how far that process is likely to go and also completely overlooking the huge number of specific reasons this process is taking place in Europe, but as generalizations go, it's not THAT wrong.

it's definitely a product of the ways in which we see the world but each and every state has incentive to preserve their autonomy, so maintaining the way things are tends to be a priority in the political realm.

there are definitely parties that take an interest in voluntary annexation but i can't think of any state as a whole (whether institutions or public view) that are largely in support of the idea. there is too much to lose for both groups. most of the support ive seen for this idea stems from an effort to save the euro.

that's not to say it isn't inevitable, in some part - i think a merging on some scale is bound to happen eventually, but i don't think it's going to be favourable (or viewed as such) for many of the states caught in the undertow

I know quite a few English people who would make a fecal cast of your lungs for that puppet state shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Still wouldn't make it wrong. The US owns the UK's nukes, and the UK navy is being designed solely to fit into the US's fleet structure. The UK is only allowed a limited amount of independent foreign policy, and serves mainly as the US seat in the EU. That is why UK PMs have been ordered to never leave the EU. The UK GCHQ is a filtering station for the NSA.

If English people don't like it, then they better do something to change it.

Europe includes Russia, in case you didn't know. Russia isn't exactly known for being peaceful at the moment.

To be fair, Russia =/= EU and they do seem to be making that distinction, whatever other nonsense they're spewing.
