And they say the US is full of lies and propaganda.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 03:38 am (UTC)(link)On a theoretical level, it's true to an extent, but it has to be recognized that the whole concept of the world being organized into a group of discrete, sovereign, distinct nation-states is to some extent a theoretical creation. It's not necessarily the only way in which the world could be organized, and treating that specific system of organization as an iron-clad law of nature is probably not justified. And we've seen, in the past, concepts of political organization that don't really match with our concept of a state. So in other words, the idea that the international sphere is composed of distinct, sovereign, self-interested states is, while an accurate descriptor of the world right now, itself a result of the ways in which we see and organize the world.
From a practical point of view, I think it has to be said that Europe does seem to have some interest in letting go some degree of stately autonomy and granting some degree of authority to a central European body. And obviously, yes, the motivation of these states is partly self-interest, but I don't think you can ascribe it entirely to self-interest (especially given how squishy the concept of self-interest gets at a certain point). I think AYRT is both exaggerating how far that process is likely to go and also completely overlooking the huge number of specific reasons this process is taking place in Europe, but as generalizations go, it's not THAT wrong.

there are definitely parties that take an interest in voluntary annexation but i can't think of any state as a whole (whether institutions or public view) that are largely in support of the idea. there is too much to lose for both groups. most of the support ive seen for this idea stems from an effort to save the euro.
that's not to say it isn't inevitable, in some part - i think a merging on some scale is bound to happen eventually, but i don't think it's going to be favourable (or viewed as such) for many of the states caught in the undertow
