Europe has just landed on A FUCKING COMET!

America currently cannot even send a man into space, it has to pay Russia to hitch a ride on its Soyuz rockets if it wants to send an American to the ISS.

Is there any doubt that America is in decline at this point? Does anybody except Americans (who want to put a brave face) even question the decline at this point?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. No one cares about anything except the moon landing. Everyone knows Neil Armstrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, we're all miserable, and wallowing in our own filth and should probably take shotguns to our heads and blow them off. Is that what you want to hear foreign scumbag?

Can't handle the banter.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
America was fixated on space because it was a race to the moon. Moon landed, no more race. Done.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
that's actually really true. If we want to land people on mars or something our enemies need to claim they can do it faster

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty cool that you sent a person onto a comet

oh wait

Pretty cool that you're able to defend yourself against other superpowers without the help of the US

oh wait

Pretty cool that you're not all in economic thrall to Germany

oh wait

Pretty cool that you're not letting Russia push you around

oh wait

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Wut?
There are no other superpowers, in fact many of us are getting more concerned about finding someone to protect us from America. Its one of the prime motivators behind closer EU ties.
Its an economic cooperative, we're no more in thrall to Germany than Michigan is to New York.
Its called diplomacy, and the reason Russia is coming out of it so well right now was that we let the US push us into yet another damn proxy pissing contest. If we'd not been trying to advance US hegemony, then Russia wouldn't be such a problem for us.

In short, you keep waiting. We'll be moving forward.

lololol is Europe a single entity now?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not yet, but it gets closer every year. The dream of a true United Earth, as seen in so many US tv sci-fi franchises, is one that is coming closer all the time from within Europe. Mainly because continental Europe isn't so fixated on refighting WW2 over every damn thing, in fact exactly the opposite.

Hey, mate, how are you doing with not letting Russia metaphorically stick your head in a toilet and give you a swirly?

You're just letting them? Oh sorry.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
If you are so concerned about Russia, let the US army fight it then. Funny how Russia has always been more of a problem for the US, an ocean away from it, than it has been to most of the Western European powers right next to it. If the US and Russia had such problems, then the cold war would have been fought between Alaska and Siberia (I'm told then can see each others houses there). Nah, its always been US policy to turn Europe into the anti-Russian battlefield to keep any war at a nice safe distance.

I normally don't like "my country's better than yours" kinds of rhetoric, because I'm not living in 'Murica. I am an American, however, so I will point out that while "Europe" just landed a robot on a comet, NASA's rovers Spirit and Opportunity have been on Mars for about ten years now, collecting data. They've worked well past their expiration date, and I'm going to be so sad when they finally stop working for good.

So don't feel too bad for us, OP, we're doing fine.

I wish we didn't have to do this "we're better than you!!" thing. A human just landed on a fucking comet! That's amazing no matter where you're from!

Now, yes, of course, our space program has been in severe decline. I doubt anyone would deny that! NASA's had its funding cut over and over, to the point that private companies are taking up the mantle. With any luck, the suborbital flight thing will start working out better for us, despite the disastrous start.

as someone from the US, i am fully aware of my country's shortcomings and i would never deny that we are in a massive debt and may never recover. also, no, i did not vote for the politicians responsible for these conditions and i strongly opposed the war. despite what you'd like to believe, US americans are not a single-minded entity.

in terms of space travel and research, many programs that can no longer be funded by the government are now being funded by private organizations and i think that's probably for the best right now.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
what are you expecting form a country that can't be assed to fund its space program because it'd rather put that money into military spending, apparently forgoing the reality that investments in space programs are also investments in national/global defense

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Listen to yourself. Europe did something. Like, Europe. Approximately 50-some countries, including Russia, the country that has been doing the space race with the USA since the beginning. Who's hitching a ride with who again? Sit down, Europeans.

1. this achievement has been a long time in the making, it's been several years since rosetta was launched and minimal effort was exerted in maintaining the craft between then and now. times have changed a lot so there isn't much to prove from something that was designed, build and launched so long ago. philae was literally on its own once it departed from rosetta. the technology it used to succeed was from a time when other agencies were better funded.

2. european and american scientists/engineers collaborated on this project.

NASA, dumbass.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, you ignorant twat. You do realize NASA was one of the chief collaborators on Philae, right? Get your head out of your ass and find some oxygen. Thankfully our scientists aren't nationalistic dickwads.

OP is being dumb, but the patriotic butthurt in this thread is entertaining.

Except that the harpoons didn't fire and it's totally possible that the thing bounced right back off the comet into oblivion.

No but sure Europe totally wins at space.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really care who is ahead in the space race, because I am excited for the implications this has for all of mankind. NASA is featuring this achievement on their website too so I think everyone is excited.
